Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Trying to introduce "solids"

My DD is 6.5 months old, and we started trying to give her infant oatmeal cereal mixed with breast milk. The first day she just tried to back away from the spoon and kept her mouth completely shut.  Tried for several minutes...tried dipping my finger in it and having her taste it too but she refused. (she puts EVERYTHING in her mouth so I was surprised she wouldn't give this a try lol)
Second day I managed to get a spoonful in her mouth and she acted like it tasted horrible and continued with the tight lips, and arching/backing away.  Repeat on 3rd day.

So my question is...could this mean she isn't "ready" or is this typical. She also has a "mind of her own" so I'm thinking this is just her giving me a challenge :)

  • Give her the spoon and see what she does with it. Maybe she will try and put that in her mouth like everything else.

I should have mentioned I tried that too.  I even tried putting her in the high chair and putting some of the cereal on the tray so she could touch it with her fingers, then hopefully put them in her mouth. that didn't work either unfortunately. i assume this is kind of normal? but dont want to keep wasting milk if it's a sign she's not quite ready

  • Try mixing it with a fruit baby food like banana or apple or pear...of course some people say don't do fruits first, but it is what worked for me. Now she loves her oatmeal with fruit and she likes veggies too.

  • When mine wouldn't take certain solids, I put the food in a mesh feeder. Just like yours, she put everything in her mouth and this works like a charm! This helped get her used to the taste and is currently the only way she will take green beans:
  • My DS was the same at 6 months.  Just a month later, he began showing an Interest in what we were eating and now he will eat anything including the oatmeal he originally hated.  To me...he just wasn't quite ready when we first tried.

  • Maybe she doesn't like the cereal. Try a different food.
  • What kind of foods did you put in the mesh feeder? This sounds like my DD might like to try that.

This is my DD too.  She hates everything I have given her - but we skipped cereal all together.  I am thinking I need to go back to that with bland cereal mixed with a taste she knows.  I may give up for a week or so and then try again.  We have tried sweet potatoes, carrots, bananas, apples, and squash.  All big failures.  My other 2 kids didn't do this, and I did start with cereal, so I am wondering if I should just back up.  I also tried just eating a banana myself and seeing if she would put her mouth on the whole banana.  Also a big failure.  I don't want to keep pushing it!  So no advice, just understanding Smile

    Good luck to you!

  • Our LO really only likes his solids when they're mixed with oatmeal: bananas and oatmeal, avocado and oatmeal (yeah, yuck), apples and oatmeal, sweet potato and oatmeal...

  • My son is about the same age and we started solids two weeks ago. This is our schedule and it works pretty well,

5:30am-nurse then oatmeal mixed formula and mixed with a fruit or veggie

9:30am-5 oz bottle breastmilk (at babysitter's)

12:30pm-5 oz bottle breastmilk then a fruit or veggie (at babysitter's)

4:00pm-5 oz bottle breastmilk (at babysitter's)

    6:30pm-nurse then fruit or veggie

    9:00pm-nurse then oatmeal/formula/solid

Sometimes his times are off, he might not eat a full bottle or oatmeal or solid but he seems to really be liking it. I tried just oatmeal at first too and he hated it so I mixed it with peas (gross) and we got that over with. We've done peaches, bananas, and now green beans.
