Baby gained no weight

Any of your lo's not gaining weight? C hasn't even gained a half pound since his 4 month visit. He is still in the 25th percentile for weight, but our pedi is having us load him with calories. She said put butter, sour cream, and cheese on everything and we recheck weight in a month. Any other suggestions?

  • We do NOT have that problem.  DD gained about 2 pounds in the last three months.

No suggestions, but I want to be on your LO's diet.  How about I just write down everything I want to eat, send it to you, and that's what you can feed C.  He'd gain weight in no time!

Oh I want his diet too! I am struggling though because I nursed him this morning, waited about 45 minutes then gave him apple jacks (for the first time, I figured they were pretty calorie dense) made him a plain egg and cheese omelette, and gave him a sippy of BM. He ate the apple jacks, drank the BM, and ate about 4 bites of the omelette. I feel like that is a TON of food!

  • Keith only gained 1lb since his 6 month. Our pedi said this is normal since he is mobile and burning so many calories.

  • I know Liam has slowly gained.  He gained the most from birth to 3 months.  Then it plateued at 16 lbs.  He was 15 at 6 months and 16 at 9 months. But I have small babies.  Christian was barely 20 lbs at 1 year old.

Maybe try avocados too.  Those have good fats and are very fatty.  Also olive oil in foods you cook.   Maybe butter stuff up!  lol.. Like his veggies.  Toast with butter.

  • Chloe has gained weight but shes still small. We're upping what we give her in a day. She used to have 4 bottles and 2 servings of solids and 1 of snacks a day, now we do 4 bottles, 3 servings of solids and 2-3 of snacks a day. The baby yogurt seems to have the most calories so we give that to her for breakfast every day. It's a bit more expensive than the other foods but I'm happy to try anything.

And sometimes I give her small bites of cookies...

  • Riley was having this problem until her 9 month check up. The doctor really started getting concerned at her 6 month appointment so she suggested I supplement with formula and started her on 3 solid meals a day I had only been doing two tiny meals a day and she really started gaining. Now she is actually in the 10thpercentile instead of off the chart. I think some kids just gain differently and its definitely not something to overly worry about but Riley really did need some formula and more solid foods to get her growth going.

  • I had DD at the doctors earlier this week and she was 17.4 and is 11 months! She actually eats really well so I don't know. The doctor didnt seem concerned based on where she is on the curve, she started at 4.8lbs and was 4.1 when we came home.

  • My son barely gained anything from 4 to 6 months. At 6 months I started give him lots of avocado, cheese, whole milk yogurt, etc and that seemed to do the trick. He ended up gaining 2.5 lbs from 6 to 8 months.

  • I would up his carbs and dairy.
Amir hasn't had this problem till his 6 and 9 month appt where he gained a lb each time but he us also crawling allot and now cruising/standing.
Could you squeeze in snacks like cream cheese bagels or hard cheeses or avocado slices?
Amir eats allot but he's just really active.

  • What he ate this morning including nurse sessions and sippys is half of what Addy is eating. It seems like a lot when I compare what she's eating and Dax. The last week she has eaten DOUBLE what Dax eats.

We had slow weight gain and regular weight checks from mos 4-9. I recommend adding healthy fat to any fruit/veggie you can (coconut oil is great, olive oil is good, too, and butter/cream), plus look for calorie-dense foods. Nut butters, avocado, cheeses. Full fat regular yogurt instead of greek style (which has more protein). Roasted veggies in oil. Homemade muffins, baked oatmeal, and mini quiches are easy to get a lot of calories into. Basically, make every solid calorie count.

Since you're aiming for calorie density, box cereals aren't the best since they don't usually have any fat in them.  Every morning he has 1/2c oatmeal with a 1/2tsp coconut oil and 1/2 banana mixed in. Yogurt snack in the afternoon.

you're still bf, right?  you might see an LC to do a weighed feeding to see where  you're supply is at this point. If he's not taking in a lot of BM, you might think about adding a bottle or an extra nursing session.

Thanks for the tips! I admit that usually when I cook I aim for the opposite effect!

I am still bf, but I haven't been worried about my supply. I still leak a LOT, and can pump about six oz on one side. In ten minutes. Would you still recommend a weighed feeding? I will definitely start pushing him to get a bottle of BM in during the day to see if that helps.

Well, a weighed feeding will tell you how much he's actually taking in. But, if you're pumping that much still, then I'd just offer another bottle. Good luck!
