I failed my 1 hour glucose screening test at my 27/28 week appt. My fasting levels were 74, but it skyrocketed to 152 after having the orange drink (which didn't taste too bad). I was given a paper from the nurse to follow the gestational diabetes diet. Basically no sodas, fruit juices (which I was just starting to really crave), candy, cakes, ice cream, desserts. She told me to just balance my carbs and protein intake. I've never really followed a diet, so I don't know what type of meals to eat. I try to pay attention to the labels and read the carbs and protein content, but it gets hard to balance it at every meal. Snacks are also an issue. I try to have grapes with walnuts/almonds as a snack, but I'm not even sure if I'm doing this right. I will get checked again in one week with just a fasting reading. If I fail that, then I'll have to do the 3hr test. So, I'm hoping that I'm doing it right. It's been tough, but I cut out the sweets, sodas, and fruit juices. Anyone have any suggestions as to what foods to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner? Baby has always measured big and doctor said he's looking to be an 8lb baby...more than that if I don't follow the diet.
Re: Pre-diabetic meals?
I have GD and my doctor explained to me to eat 6 small meals she explained that for breakfast I could have 30 grams carbohydate0-2 ounces meat and 1-2 servings Unlimited vegetables of fat
morning snack 30 carbohydrate and 1 ounce protein
Lunch 45 grams carbohydrate 2ounces meat 1 fat serving and unlimited vegetables
afternoon snack 15- 20 carbohydrate and 1 ounce protein
Dinner 45 carbohydrate unlimited vegetables
3 ounces meat and 1-2 servings of fat vegetables unlimited
evening snack 30 carbohydrate grams and 1oz protein
The one hour is a screening tool and is not meant to diagnose GD unless you score exceptionally high (152 is not that high).
There's diet info here along with suggestions:
