6 pounds In one day?

Ok ladies I'm a first time mom and don't want to freak out just yet so I want opinions before I call the doctor. I've been swelling a lot lately but I do live in Oklahoma and the heat doesn't play around! But here in the last day only my right foot/leg has swollen? Plus what has really gotten me upset is I stepped on the scale and went from 201 to 207 in one day?!? That scale is accurate. It's a digital. I don't drink beyond the amount of 8 glasses of water a day and drink an occasional coke a day. So I'm confused. But I go to the doctor tomorrow. I'm just worried it could be preeclampsia. It runs in my family. Everyone gets it. So my urine hasn't been checked in little over a month. Should I wait till I go to the dr or go to the er? I don't want to overreact but preeclampsia untreated is serious. My mom is already mad at me. But I hate crying wolf. Help!!!!

  • Why dont you call your doc. You are swelling and it could be water weight.

  • When in doubt, call your doctor.  This is my 3rd, and I still call my doctor/nurse when I'm questioning if something is ok.  They understand.  Call your doctor and he/she will either put your mind at ease or send you to L&D to get checked out.  They want your baby to be ok as much as you do.

I think you should call your doctor and ask. By the way, 8 glasses of water is not enough. It sounds weird but drinking not enough water results in water gain and your body needs at least 70 oz of water. You should even consume more when you have caffeine.
  • Swelling on one side sounds kind of concerning to me too, on top of the weight gain. Is it red or sore to the touch at all? Definitely call your doctor and they can advise you on whether or not it can wait until tomorrow.

  • I agree with the increase your water rec.  Water is the miracle cure to most things when pregnant.  8 glasses is not enough in hot weather for a pregnant person.  Also cut salt and eat more protein and fiber.

I had a mild stomach flu over the weekend and lost 5 lbs in 12 hours.  Now that was of course just water weight.  I say that just to point out have much water weight fluctuation can happen without there necessarily being anything "bad" going on.  Water retention plus a little constipation can easily put someone up 5-6 lbs depending on their build.

This is what would worry me too. I would call and see if they are concerned about the swelling on only your right side, or if they are ok seeing you tomorrow.

  • I drink more than 8 glasses a day and if I don't, I swell, I drink at least 100 ounces. Also, even before pregnancy I would fluctuate about 5 pounds at any point in the day, with an accurate digital scale.

But the fact that you are only swelling in one spot would make me call the OB ASAP. Why would your mom be mad? You should be concerned about your and baby's health and take care of this in case it is serious, I don't understand why anyone would be mad about that.
  • definitely call your doctor! it will ease your mind and they may have you come in today instead of tomorrow.
  • *sigh* call your doctor please.

  • I wouldn't freak out. It's prolly water weight . It happens to me some days and then next day it's back down a few lbs.... Really wouldn't be concerned unless you have a ton of sudden swelling too...

  • I gained 5 lbs in one day but then lost 3 the next. Did you eat anything extremely salty? I realized that I had went to visit my mom who uses a lot of salt in her cooking and it was super hot that day. I drank lots of water and by the next day the swelling and water weight was gone. Hope you feel better soon!!
  • Swelling on one side or in one specific area is a bad sign! I would not wait til your appointment tomorrow to ask about it. See if you can call your doctor, or a nurse hotline if your insurance offers that.
  • If you haven't yet, call ob NOW.  Rapid weight gain and one-sided swelling are two (as you mentioned) signs of pre-e and early treatment dramatically improves outcomes.
