Parenting after a Loss

Help for friends grieving loss of 4 year old (sensitive obviously)

Some very good friends of our family tragically lost their 4 year old in a car accident this weekend.  I am just at a loss as to what to do for them.  A card just doesn't seem like enough?  I usually make donations in someone's name but this was very sudden and unexpected death in a car accident so it's not like a donation to the American Cancer Society or anything would make much sense.

TIA for any suggestions.

  • Oh, Peanut!  There are no words.  I am so sorry for your friends' loss.

The only thing that came to mind was an engraved necklace with their LO's name or initials on it?

  • I am so so sorry for your friend that is terrible. My thoughts are with them!!!

Something that would help the family that people did for us was make food or dinners for us.People brought over everthing for a meal even down to a dessert it truly helped us. I couldn't function at all after we lost Sydney and these meals helped. We also had family come over and  volunteered to clean our house since I had a c section. Now I know that isn't the same situation but it helped us so much.  It helped when I couldn't get out of bed because I was so sad too.  Dh couldnt take care of everything and me too. We also had 2 other kids so he had to make sure they were eating as well as me.

I also think a gift with the child name on it or something engraved friends gave us a wind chime with our DD's name on it. We received so many lovely gifts.

One thing I wouldn't send it slowers they remind me of a fineral home and they upset me more since they die too.

  • I am so so sorry for them!! How devastating!!

I agree with the meals.  And if you wanted to do something more personal, a necklace or maybe an origami owl pendant?

  • Lurking... I too had friends who suffered the devastating and totally unexpected loss of a four year old late last year. They did eventually name a couple of memorial funds to give to. They weren't related to a disease or anything, just places their son loved that could use gifts wisely, like the local library. So, with a little time you might have those options too.

  • How devestating! I'm not sure what I would do...I like the jewelry/engrave ment....maybe professionally frame a special picture of the child or family. I guess I would do that later on though...it might be too hard to receive such a gift right away.

Sending them lots of thoughts and prayers.:::hugs::::

  • I really appreciated when my friends started a meal train for me. Check out the meal train website, it's a calendar that people can use to coordinate meals for the family. Also, one of my favorite gifts is when my friends named a star after my babies. I think you can get them on star registry.com. I agree with PP...no flowers. I'm so sorry for your friends' devastating loss.
