C-sections

baby measuring small

I went last week to have a growth scan and set a date to have my C-section when during the growth scan baby girl was measuring in the 8th percentile so I have to go in twice a week for nst's once a week for dopplers and once a week to see my dr. I went in yesterday for my week dr visit and he told me that he is waiting and trying to keep her in until 36 weeks. There is no specific day but I know it will be between July 12th through July 19th when I will be having my C-section. Have any of you ladies have to go through this with a baby that is measuring small? Dr also said the way it looks that it might have to do with my high blood pressure.

Hi MrsNyberg, is your Dr calling this IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction)? If so, babycenter has a great IUGR board for questions and support. Both my DS and current LO have been IUGR- DS was <1st percentile when he was born, and DD last measured around the 6th percentile I believe. I get twice weekly NSTs and ultrasounds to assess umbilical cord blood flow and biophysical profiles (breathing, movements, amniotic fluid), see the doc weekly, and and get a growth US every 3 weeks.

Most docs will deliver IUGR babies between 37 and 38 weeks at the latest, or sooner if problems with the above tests are noted or baby's growth slows. My DS had to come out at almost 33 weeks for all of the above reasons, and once they get to a certain point, these LOs tend to grow better on the outside than in. My DD is doing much better than DS was, so if all stays as is she'll be delivered at 38 weeks on the dot. IUGR is stressful bc it's typically out of your control (it has generally has nothing to do with your diet or weight gain, although typically docs will recommend rest, high protein diet, and if blood pressure is an issue then certainly controlling that), and it's a waiting game. Since my LO was found small at 30 weeks, every doc has thought I had "maybe 1or 2 weeks" left before she'd need to come out. Here we are almost 7 weeks later and she's still cooking!

Hope your LO continues to cook and grow, and wish you well!

He isn't really calling it anything that he has said to me. I am doing all the same as you with the monitoring. NST 2x a week Doppler 1x a week a update on the growth scan after 3 weeks. They check the amniotic fluid levels and the umbilical blood flow. Are your little ones still tiny or have trouble growing after being born or is it just in uteral ? I also have hbp and gestational diabetes so that's why I think he is saying 36 weeks. Good luck with your little one and I am going to go check out that group too.

Mine was IUGR. At her smallest she measured 6th percentile. I implemented a high calorie high protein diet along with reasting as much as possible on my left side and she started growing better. She was 12th percentile when she was born. I also had NSTs 2 times a week and growth ultrasounds alone with Doppler flows every 2 weeks. Because she was growing my dr did not take her until 39 weeks. However, I also had problems with my fluid levels. We delivered a day early due to low fluid levels. When they took her out there was no fluid and the sack was Saran wrapped to her head. There is a higher risk for fetal demise after 37 weeks. I think we were lucky that the dr decided to check our fluid the day before. I don't think my LO would have made it if we waited until the next day. Today she is a happy, healthy, and chubby 4 month old. I second the babycenter board, it has great info. There are a few other IUGR mamas on high risk right now as well. Page me over on feb 2013 if you have more questions.

Last week when they measured my fluid levels it was at 16 and dr is happy with that. He said he wasn't worried unless it was under 10, happy if its between 10 and 22. It was 12 one day the next it was 13 and a week later it was at 16. Also at the last check she flipped around to being breech. Congrats on your little girl being healthy and growing good.

  • Had another Doppler today fluid is at 17 but my high risk dr said something odd about the blood flow is high so abnormal and started giving me a steroid shot just in case. My normal dr is away on business for 3 weeks so I hope nothing happens before he returns. The HR dr also said my belly is still growing at a normal rate. On my nst today I was also having contractions that I had no clue about just my stomach hardening. He had no concern over the contractions I gather as he didn't check.

  • My baby girl was growth restricted as well and I had to do all the tests weekly. The main concern with her was her small abdominal. I ended up delivering at 38 weeks  (Ped thinks she was more like 36 weeks) because she wasn't moving much during the Doppler and nst. At 10 weeks she is a whopping 8 1/2 lbs! she is just going to be a little petite.
