Returning to work: How to pumping and saving?

Hey! I am currently out for summer break with my new baby boy! Breastfeeding has been going well and I am wanting to start pumping and saving for when I return to work late this August. LO will be 4 months when I return. I have started pumping after he nurses on the side he nurses. In the morning I get about 3-4 oz after he nurses and during the day 1/2-1 oz. I was told to start pumping the other breast while he nurses but I don't seem to be that coordinated. LOL! Also, the times I did try this I didn't seem to have enough milk the next time he needed to nurse. Any suggestions on how to build my freezer stash? I really want to have a good little stash when I return to work.

I should also mention that I have a 21 month old daughter who is currently potty training so finding time to pump during the day can be difficult.

TIA!

  • I would wake up engorged, so I would feed DS and pump quite a bit in the morning. That's the only time of day I pumped when I was on maternity leave, so didn't have a monstrous stash, but enough to feel comfortable. I would just do what you're doing (or even just that morning pump--the others don't sound worth it) and get a good pumping routine when you go back to work and you'll be fine!

  • Morning is going to be your prime time.  Can you add a pumping to one side an hour or two before nursing?

  • When I was pumping I made my own hands-free pumping bra. I cut small holes where my nipples were in a tight spandex nursing bra. It was a lot easier to pump on one side while he ate when I didn't have to hold it!

Your body usually adjusts when you start demanding more. If you pump after every feeding for ten or fifteen minutes you should notice after a week or so that you have more. You might not get much (or might not get anything) at first but you should after a couple of days. After your supply increases you might be able to go back to pumping one side while he eats from the other. It might be a little bit of an adjustment for your little one while your supply increases but it's worth a shot if you're trying to pump more.

This. It is a supply and demand system. It takes a couple days but your body will start producing more milk to keep up with both. I really liked my simple wishes bra for double pumping. About the time I quit they were talking about a bra they designed for nursing and pumping at the same time. Might be worth investigation.
