December 2010 Moms

ease my fears, please!

DH and I are set to go to this lovely B and B next week for two nights.  We are leaving Wednesday during his nap, and will come home sometime Friday afternoon.  Most likely we will get back while he is napping, so we will be there when he wakes up.  While it's 48 hours, I feel better that it is only one full day.

Last year we went, but at that time Aiden wasn't as aware of us coming and going.  Or, I guess he was, but wasn't as attached.  Since he's our first, I wasn't expecting it to get worse.  I should have known I suppose!  But anyway, Aiden is more clingy lately.  He even gets upset sometimes when my mom comes over because he thinks we are leaving.  He's always been fine when we leave, and if he cries, he's over it within minutes.  But this scares me and I of course imagine the worst and picture him crying for 48 hours straight.

Anyone leave for a mini trip like this with a child who hasn't been thrilled about any time away from your or your DH?  Please tell me it was just fine!

Oh, and my mom is staying at our house with him, so that should help.

Re: ease my fears, please!

  • We haven't taken any trips without the kids (although we desperately need to!) but when we do go out without them, it's backfired on us a few times leaving during T's nap/while he wasn't looking, etc. It's definitely been our experience to just tell him the truth, give hugs and kisses and leave. He recovers faster and doesn't keep asking where we are.

Either way, LO will be fine and I hope you have a fantastic time!!! Go knowing I am very jeleous of your time away ;)

  • This kind-of counts...N stayed with my sister (BIL and cousin too) for 2 nights while C was born.  He did great and didn't really seem to miss us all that much!  Sis has a similar parenting style though and he loooves his cousin.

  • We've done several short trips and one long eight day trip. Ava was great every time! She missed us, and we missed her, but it is seriously so nice to have uninterrupted adult time. You'll all so great!

We did one overnight where we both were gone back when B was about 2.  He didn't like that we left, but he wasn't crying and moping the whole time.

He sobs when we leave his with the babysitter, but I know he's fine within minutes of us leaving.  It was the same thing with the overnight.

Good luck and enjoy the adult time!  It's so important to squeeze that in when you can.
