Parenting after a Loss

Finger Foods/Purees Question

We've started consistently offering DS finger foods with most of his meals and he is absolutely loving feeding himself and has done well with everything that we've offered him.  The problem we're having now is that he is starting to refuse purees.  He will eat yogurt, oatmeal and some fruit purees from a spoon but almost everything else, even stuff he used to like, he is now starting to refuse.  I don't mind finger foods when we are home or at a relatives but when we are out in public places purees definitely seem easier and a lot less of a mess.  Is this normal? Any meal ideas or advice for what to offer DS while out?

Re: Finger Foods/Purees Question

  • We feed them whatever we're eating, within reason. At Mexican restaurants we do rice, beans, and tortillas. At burger places we will give them pieces of our burger and veggies. Otherwise I keep a container of puffs, graham crackers, goldfish, and pouches in my diaper bag. I don't think it's any messier for us than pures would have been, but we do tip better because there is almost always food on the floor.

  • Puffs, cheese, and bananas were my go to's at that age. Little things that I could hand her or pop right in her mouth. Now I just make sure I order something "DD friendly" (nothing spicy, too sugery, or something I know she doesn't like) for myself and feed her off of my plate. I always carry Cheerios just in case.

  • DD is doing the SAME thing. Stuff she loved she won't let me feed her because she's way more into feeding herself. I've been carrying Cheerios, berries I can break up, and cheese. I am totally going to check out that site that Daylights linked, though. I need more ideas!

Missa pretty much nailed what I was going to say.  I think this is one of those, "You know you're a mom if..." things.  I find pouches and cheerios in my pocketbook these days, lol.

ps. Missa, That pic of the boys is darling!
