Rear Facing Car Seats Until 2

https://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/aaps-new-car-seat-guidelines-change-rear-facing-booster-rules-2466904.html

I really hope more people start keeping their children rear-facing longer! I kept DS(4.5) only until about 14 months, if I remember correctly. Now I know better and I will keep DD rear facing for as long as possible!

Re: Rear Facing Car Seats Until 2

  • Ideally it should be as close to 4 as possible. This is a step in the right direction though.

  • I had a conversation about this today with our public health nurse. Our recommendation is only one year (Canada), yet so much research shows it should be way higher. She had some European stats (Sweden maybe?) where the minimum age is 3, but most do it til 4, and the injury rate was so much lower. I was happy to see her pushing for longer than the "official". The nurses here do the immunizations and well child visits, so a lot of moms go to them for advice.

Hmm, I'm in Canada as well and we were recommended two years as well, by both the public health nurse and the police when they installed our car seat

  • I've said it before, but I've learned soooo much from them I have to keep saying it, look for Car Seats for the Littles on fb and join the group. They have techs from around the world, they are research and scientifically based, and can help you and teach you nearly anything carseat related.

I wasnt clear there-our PHN tells people 2 years too, but the discussion came because she had to point out the pamphlets she was giving me said one year, but she recommended at least 2. The law, car seat manuals and the pamphlets the province provide all say you can turn them after 1 year as long as they meet the other criteria. I was just saying that the "official" recommendation should change and be reflected in law and pamphlets.

  • Don't take this to mean that I'm not going to rear face/use a booster, but random question... When we were kids, like younger elementary, I remember my parents taking my brother and me places with a friend each. Usually, one of us was in front and we'd have three in back. If you follow the newer guidelines with bigger booster seats, how can you ever take more than two kids anywhere in a normal sized car?

You don't. Or you buy low profile boosters. We are looking at getting me a 7 passenger vehicle just for this reason.

I like it in theory, but that's not really practical for many people.  There was a study in 2012 about booster use with car pools, and only like 50% of parents insisted on boosters in that case.  The reasons most cited where practical space constraints and not being able to coordinate boosters for all kids, both of which I can see (picture the last minute call when a friend's mom asks you to pick up her child too, and you haven't had time to coordinate picking one up/her dropping one off).  I hate saying it, but we'll probably be in that case at some point since we're planning on 2-3 kids.

We already have a spare convertible car seat and boosters for this very reason. We want one more kid, plus we have a dog. Hence why we're looking at a 7 passenger vehicle. It's just the most practical. Plus I'm a huge stickler to car seats and boosters.

It definitely gets harder the more kids you have and perhaps if you can't afford a larger SUV or mini-van not to mention maybe needing two of them.

We have a ton of car seats and boosters because we have a set for each of our cars but we were just out at a birthday party and one mom asked if we could drive her son home and I said sure but then realized I didn't have an extra booster with me.  She looked at me like I was crazy and said her son wasn't still in a booster (age 6).  To some parents it just isn't as a big of a deal as it is to others.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
