Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Food Question

In my research to decide whether or not to do BLW, I've seen several people talking about how their babies eat yogurt...however, I've also seen people say that you should wait to close to the 1 yr mark to give your baby cow's milk....yogurt has milk in it so I'm wondering does that 1 yr mark only apply to straight up milk or are some people just giving their kids dairy too early?

Re: Food Question

  • Yes, the 1 year mark only applies to straight WCM. LOs can be given dairy products earlier.

  • Ditto what PP said.  The main issue is some parents substitute cow's milk for breast milk or formula prior to 1 yr, which is not recommended.  However, eating dairy products (not to replace BM/formula) is fine before 1 yr.  Yogurt is particularly good b/c of the active cultures in it - helps to line your baby's gut with good bacteria.  I feed DS yogurt and cheese.

DS loves yogurt.  We started yogurt around 6.5 months.  We do plain greek yogurt, 2%, because they don't have whole milk plain yogurt at my grocery store (unless it's in a gigantic container.)

I believe the culturing process in yogurt alters the milk protein, making it easier to digest and less likely to cause tummy trouble.  According to Dr. Sears: "Bacterial enzymes created by the culturing process, partially digest the milk protein casein, making it easier to absorb and less allergenic" and "While the amount varies among brands of yogurt, in general, yogurt has less lactose than milk. The culturing process has already broken down the milk sugar lactose into glucose and galactose, two sugars that are easily absorbed by lactose-intolerant persons."

This. I was instructed to wait on all dairy until 9 months. But based on my own research I'm starting yogurt and cheese now, and milk if cooked, but no straight milk until closer to 12 months.

  • Thanks ladies! We'll probably be starting LO on solids after her dr appt Friday and I was afraid I'd forget to ask the pedi about this.

  • Our pedi said we could start yogurt and cheese at the 6 month appointment.  DD loves the plain whole fat yogurt mixed with fruit- either fruit I've pureed or sometimes I'll use a half of a jar of fruit babyfood puree/half yogurt combo.  Cheese is not her favorite- I think because of the texture.  She's also had some tiny sips of whole milk when she tries to grab the cup from my hand and wants a sip of what I'm having.
  • My LO is a soy baby so I have given him both whole fat plain soy yogurt and coconut milk yogurt (which is delish!)

  • I'll wait until 1 yr before giving dairy. I'm not good at knowing what to give to my baby but i always find different fruits and vegetables, here: https://goodmomming.com/  there're specific for age. I use it and I had no incidents!
