Not a gate, a child safety lock on the door handle. He can probably climb a gate and its not safe to let them roam around at night and possibly fall down stairs so that's the best option IMO.
Or turn the door knob around so you can lock it from the outside.
I would leave my DS crying for 5 minutes, go upstairs, tell him I love him and it's bed time, put him back in bed and then leave. Then I'd go up after 10 more minutes.. Basically sleep training. But I know that works for my kid.
We've been having this problem too. We just take him back to bed stay a minute and leave. We also bought him a dream lite and tell him it will protect him. We are down to 2 wake ups each night. We didnt do a gate because he can get over it and I'm definitely not comfortable locking him in.
