My go to first birthday gift is the Parum Pum Pum drum. They sell it at Target. It's great for either a girl or a boy. DS still loves playing with his a year and a half later.

I second the puzzles, blocks and books.

Or maybe some outdoor toys for the summer? I just went to a 1st birthday and bought the birthday boy a little plastic adirondack chair and filled the seat with outdoor stuff - a splash pad, beach towel, little fishing rod set, sun hat and 2 outfits. It came out really cute! You could definitely make it more girly.

Those Melissa & Doug puzzles are awesome - DD loves them!

For her first birthday, we also received Mega Blocks, books, some stuffed animals and Little People (we got the Princess Castle, House and Barn, and various people/animals to go with them). And some clothes, which was welcome for the upcoming season.

She also loves balls of any kind.
