Tea - When to start?

Hi Ladies,

I know there have been a few posts about red raspberry leaf tea and Mother's Milk tea, but the search option isn't finding them for me. If you drank one or both of these, when did you start? I am 30 weeks now.  Should I start the red raspberry leaf now and the Mother's Milk after LO is born? Wait on both? Start on both?

I have a Dr. Appt. on Monday so I will ask my OB then, but wanted to get all of your opinions as well.  TIA!

Re: Tea - When to start?

  • Mother's Milk Tea says right on the box not to take while pregnant. I think (never looked because it doesn't apply to me) that you aren't supposed to drink the RR tea until after you're full term.

  • I'll go google myself, but since there is the post now, what's the benefit of these teas?

  • Since I had been having contractions with too much physical activity, my mw told me to hold off on the raspberry leaf until after 36 weeks just in case it triggered more of them.  I've read of others drinking it all through pregnancy.

I didn't know that the box had a warning. Guess I should have looked at it before posting this. Good to know. Thanks!

Red Raspberry Leaf tea is supposed to help strengthen your uterine muscles, which may help make contractions and labor a little more bearable. Mother's Milk tea helps with your breast milk supply.

  • I don't plan to start until 36 weeks at least. While RRL tea is primarily to strengthen the uteran muscles it can also induce labor, at least that's what our family acupuncture/natural foods guru told me.

  • RRLT - You can start your 2-3 cups (8oz cups) per the directions on the box at 37 weeks. Some start sooner, but my midwife said not to. You want to at least be term.

Mother's Milk has licorice root in it. DO NOT take that while pregnant. Read the directions on the box, man.

  • I'm starting 1 cup a day or RRL tea at 32 weeks, and increasing as I go along. It won't induce labor if you aren't at risk for Preter, it is strictly to tone the uterus and make It more efficient once you are in labor. I'm currently drinking 1 cup of peaceful mama tea before bed, which is all organic lemon balm leaf, chamomile flower, oat straw, orange peel and red raspberry leaf tea.

Haven't looked at the box yet, man. My DH was going to look into buying them at the store today, which is why I asked here. I tend to trust some of the mamas here more than I do google sometimes. Thanks for the input though.

  • Been drinking RRL since 12 weeks on and off. Now at 33 weeks I have 2 cups a day. Midwife told me to drink as much as I felt like. I'll probably try to increase it after 37 weeks.
  • I have read so many different answers regarding the tea, when to start and its effects.

I asked my midwife about it at my appointment on Monday and she said its a common misconception that it induces labor. She said it simply tones the uterus. I know others have been told otherwise though. I'm going to trust my doctor and start drinking one cup of tea per day this week.
