Private health insurance question?

Currently we have group health insurance through DH's employer.  Let's say DH was to change careers and instead of offering insurance they offer a stipend to help pay for private insurance.

I have a rare disease and a history of cancer.  the boys have genetic mutations that result in significant global delays.

Private insurance companies don't return or calls or return with astronomical quotes we could never afford (My parents have private health insurance so I'm aware of the realistic cost of it).

Are there any other alternatives?  Can the boys then qualify for MedicAid or something else?

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

Re: Private health insurance question?

  • Your kids could qualify for medicaid under the Katie Beckett waiver. That would still leave you and dh needing insurance though.

You can probably get Medicaid for the kids or even CHIP. Medicaid is federal monies administrated by the states; some states have significant wait lists for Medicaid waivers. I had a friend whose son died waiting to come to the top of the list and others whose kids aged out.

The downside is that without private insurance, you can't keep them covered under the parental policy until 26.

I figured there would be a long waiting list of some sort.  DH is just very unhappy at his job and got a good offer, but again the insurance would be our issue so we're trying to parse out what is feasible and not feasible.

I'm guessing the offer is so "good" because they don't spend the ridiculous amount of money paying for health insurance.

theres not always a long wait and varies by state. I have a friend whose son is on Katie Beckett and it only took a couple months to go through. I'd call your local Dhs office and inquire.

  • Would one of the High Deductible health care plans be more affordable? Insurance was going to cost 1000 a month premium plus a 3000 deductible to cover myself, DH and DD through my job. We got a better deal going with a private high deductible plan that covers everything 100 percent once we meet our 7000 deductible. Our premium is about 200 a month. We max out our deductible every year, and rates don't go up that much.
