Hummus

What are your hummus recipes? I love chick peas but have never had hummus! I looked at the store bought container and it didn't seem like it was all that good for you but my mother in law thinks its a superfood. I'm just wondering if making your own is better than store bought. I would imagine it is

Re: Hummus

  • I can NEVER make it as good as the Sabra brand roasted red pepper.... or any Sabra hummus for that matter. DS LOVES it too! He loves Hummus sandwiches, he also eats it on crackers, carrots, red bell peppers, and today with cucumber. YUMMY! Go get some and enjoy!

  • I also don't have a recipe and second the Sabra brand suggestion. We love the olive and so does DD. Do you have a local Mediterranean restaurant in your area? Our favorite place sells their hummus and that is the best.

DD dips just about everything into it and we use it as a sandwich spread with cheese, cucumbers, tofurkey (we're vegetarians), etc. She even loves it with veggie dogs. Strange child. :-)

  • I personally like homemade hummus WAY better than store bought.  Including the varieties already listed.  (I really don't like Sabra, honestly.  But we all have different tastes, and I can understand why someone would.  If I were to buy a premade one, the fresh-made version in the Whole Foods deli is the one I like best.)

    Anywho, my main recipe:

    1 can garbanzo beans, drained

1/3 cup (or so, I don't actually measure) roasted sesame tahini (yes, roasted makes a difference - it's the primary reason homemade is better :P and I just get mine at the local grocery store, but availability probably varies by geographic region)

1 lemon, juiced (fresh really does taste better, but you can use bottled in a pinch)

    2-3 cloves garlic

    light olive oil

1/2 tsp salt (ok, I use two very generous pinches of kosher salt, so this is an estimate)

pinch of cumin (again, a critical ingredient, but put in such small quantities that you don't actually taste it

optionally, a pinch of smoked paprika

Stick it all in a food processor and blend until smooth - add more olive oil (or lemon juice, depending on your mood) until it's the desired consistency.  (I like mine very thick.)

  • Thank you ladies! I will definitely make it with the recipe and buy Sabra brand. Unfortunately we don't have a Mediterranean restaurant, we are lucky to have a Walmart in the area but I have seen this brand. Also the tahini sesame stuff... Is that bought at a place like Walmart or do I have to try to find a specialty store? And do I roast it myself? Thanks again
  • This is the roasted tahini I use: https://www.maranathafoods.com/product/roasted-natural-tahini-salt.  I'm able to get it at Safeway (a major chain on the west coast), but even Safeway's stocks vary state-to-state.  I don't know if Walmart would have it - though it wouldn't totally shock me if they did in Washington or California (the places I've lived).  You definitely don't have to roast it yourself - this is totally a five minute recipe.

  • I always make my own hummus.  I love hummus and so does DD (She's been eating it since she was 7 months old.)  Here's what I put in.  I don't really measure anything, I kind of just put it in to taste.  I do it all in the food processor.

2 cans of chickpeas (drained and rinsed)

maybe 3 or 4 cloves of chopped garlic (you can add more or less to your liking)

    a few tablespoons of tahini

cumin (I start with a teaspoon.  I usually don't put more than that but some people like more)

a little bit of cayenne pepper (maybe start with 1/8 of a teaspoon)

    lemon juice

I use the liquid from the chickpeas and extra virgin olive oil to reach the desired consistency.

My aunt puts a cucumber in hers and that's pretty good too.
