Discipline Problem

While playing outside, E keeps taking her hat off and throwing it on the ground. I keep picking it up and putting it back on. We have 8000 sq ft of yard and I just can't wander around behind her all afternoon putting her hat back on. Nothing is working - not speaking to her clearly about it, not threats, not making her sit down with me for a while after she takes it off, not going inside for a while, not yelling. Nothing. The hat has a strap that supposed to make it hard to take off. Yeah right.

Any suggestions?

Re: Discipline Problem

  • Lol at the title if this post. It's not a discipline problem, most toddlers don't like hats or chin straps. There's not really anything you can do other than maybe trying another hat.

  • I'm actually on a good 10 minute run right now since I folded back the brim. Could it just be that she couldn't see well? Let's hope. Please cross your fingers for me. I do not want to explain to DH that I could not keep his pale baby protected from the sun when he gets home tonight and she's all red. Damn Irish genes...

I thought the title was cheeky. Oh well.

  • I thought you were serious, sorry. Lo likes her brims flipped up. I also bought her an iPlay hat that ties and she prefers it or no strap at all to Velcro ones.

The only hat I can get Violet to keep on is an Urban Baby Bonnet. It has 3 snaps that she doesn't seem to be able to pry off unless she's really trying. It doesn't protect the back of her neck but at least it keeps the sun out of her eyes. (She won't keep on sunglasses.)

Ooh those are super cute. I need to order one. Thanks for the suggestion. This velcro strap is not cutting it!

  • Toddlers are fickle jerks. N will not have anything to do with straps. If she keeps a hat on, the straps hang.

  • P refuses to wear a hat. I've tried 3 different kinds and he's not having it. Unfortunately, he's very fair like me so I lube him up with sunscreen. The poor guy is white by the time I am done with him but it has to be done.

Lily isn't a fan of the wide-brimmed hats, especially with anything that goes under the chin to keep them on, but she loves wearing a baseball cap.  Probably 'cause DH wears them a lot.  It doesn't help her neck/ears (fortunately her hair covers those pretty well), but it keeps her face shaded.

  • The only thing that remotely works for us is telling her that if she doesn't keep her hat on, she is going to have to go inside. Then if she takes it off, I bring her inside and she cries because she wants to go back out, so I tell her again that she is going to have to keep her hat on if she wants to be outside.  It seems to work because she has been keeping her hat on more, and she will usually put it back on with the mention of "inside."  But it took a lot of work to get to this point!

I have no idea what to do when we go to the beach and there is no inside though!
