Chances of scheduled csec getting bumped for emergency??

Hi mommas!

I have a c-section scheduled for tomorrow morning. Ill be 39w2d with twins and I was wondering what the chances may be that ill get there and be told that im being bumped for an emergency....? I understand that no one can definitively 'answer' this, im just curious if anyone has experienced this happening, where they have had theirs scheduled and ended up getting bumped. How long did you have to wait? i.e. a few hours, a day, a few days.......???

TIA!

Re: Chances of scheduled csec getting bumped for emergency??

  • A friend of mine warned me about this before going in, and sure enough, I was delayed by 4 hours for emergency cases. I think this is typical, your surgery will still be on the same day, just delayed by a matter of hours.

  • My second c-section was bumped due to an emergency, only a few hours though. I got to the hospital at 5:30am and didnt have the operation 11. With my first, also scheduled, mine was right on time.
My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013! image

I think it depends on how big your hospital is and how many doctors are on the floor. I delivered DD at 33 weeks and they had a constant rotation of emergency and scheduled csections.

  • That is why I tried to schedule mine first thing in the morning, there is less likely chance of them running behind because of emergencies. I had the first appt in the morning and it went off without a hitch, thats not to say that it will be like that this time.

With my emergency c section I didn't bump anyone because it was like 8 at night and with my scheduled I was delayed about an hour but that was because of my blood test before the surgery came back abnormal and they had to re-run them (and everything was fine). I think if you get delayed it would only be a few hours, unless it's a freak thing with like 1 surgeon and there are back to back emergencies.

Good luck and you are a rock star for carrying twins that long! Hope it all goes well!

Mine was bumped with DD. I got to the hospital at 1:30, with surgery scheduled at 3:30. I finally had DD at 9:37 pm. It was a long day. My doc gave me the option of waiting until the next day, but I figured let's just do it now! With this LO I am the first scheduled surgery for the day!

  • I am an Ob nurse and while people do get bumped for emergencies, often times, when someone has multiples as you do, they don't do alot of other "scheduled" sections around that time, so if you do get bumped it shouldn't be for more than a few hours at max.

  • I've had 2 scheduled c/s, one at 7:30am, one at 5:00pm.  Neither was bumped.  The hospital I deliver at has 2 ORs in maternity so if there's an emergency during a c/s that's already going on there's a room available.

  • I think we have 2 O.R's as well.

But my OB practice only has 2 OB's and im not sure how they handle emergencies that come up with their patients. I hope no one has an emergency tomorrow =)

I guess that's about all I can really do.

  • I was an emergency that bumped regular prenatal appointments and other c-sections.

When it was time for my RCS I was bumped. It was no big deal since I was the bumper once I had more compassion about it.  I was bumped an hour.

  • Our hospital has a new policy (started in May) that says there is one OR for scheduled c/s so they won't be bumped by emergencies.

But, my second and third c/s were before this policy, and this is what happened:

2nd c/s: scheduled 8 am, in OR at noon

3rd c/s: scheduled 8 am, in OR at 10 am

So, for me, neither were bumped THAT long, but I know that the woman after me who was scheduled for 10 am ended up not getting in till 8 PM!! :S

  • DS was breech and my water broke at 37 weeks. I got bumped a few times! Went in at 2pm and finally had DS after 10. Got to have contractions with no meds for 8 hrs. No fair!
  • This happened to me when I had DD in April. I was scheduled for 12:30 but they let me know upon my arrival that my doctor had an emergency coming in and I'd be bumped. They took me back to triage and MH and I hung out until they were ready for us. I was taken back around 2:30 and DD arrived a little after 3:00pm.  My c/s with DS was pushed back because my OB was with a patient delivering via VBAC.

  • Mine was scheduled for 9:30am. We were pushed back an hour for a couple having 33 wk twins. It was the NICU teams that had us wait so they could be there for our LOs too.

  • I was an emergency C-section after an OB appointment u/s showed my baby was in distress and was not doing well (turns out the cord was wrapped around his neck multiple times).  They literally ran me up there and had the baby out 45 min later.  If we had waited much longer, they said he may not have made it or could have sustained permanent brain damage.

I will never, ever get annoyed by being bumped for a RCS or even to wait in the OB's office again due to someone else's emergency.

I hope this doesn't come off as Debbie downer, it just gave me a new perspective since I can often be impatient about things.  Just be thankful that you are going to get a healthy baby out in the end!  Good luck!

  • I've seen this happen on two Baby Story shows...if that helps. Stick out tongue Certainly seems like a possibility to be prepared for, so you're not caught off guard if it does happen.
