What are your hummus recipes? I love chick peas but have never had hummus! I looked at the store bought container and it didn't seem like it was all that good for you but my mother in law thinks its a superfood. I'm just wondering if making your own is better than store bought. I would imagine it is
Re: Hummus
I also don't have a recipe and second the Sabra brand suggestion. We love the olive and so does DD. Do you have a local Mediterranean restaurant in your area? Our favorite place sells their hummus and that is the best.
DD dips just about everything into it and we use it as a sandwich spread with cheese, cucumbers, tofurkey (we're vegetarians), etc. She even loves it with veggie dogs. Strange child. :-)
I personally like homemade hummus WAY better than store bought. Including the varieties already listed. (I really don't like Sabra, honestly. But we all have different tastes, and I can understand why someone would. If I were to buy a premade one, the fresh-made version in the Whole Foods deli is the one I like best.)
Anywho, my main recipe:
1 can garbanzo beans, drained
1/3 cup (or so, I don't actually measure) roasted sesame tahini (yes, roasted makes a difference - it's the primary reason homemade is better :P and I just get mine at the local grocery store, but availability probably varies by geographic region)
1 lemon, juiced (fresh really does taste better, but you can use bottled in a pinch)
2-3 cloves garlic
light olive oil
1/2 tsp salt (ok, I use two very generous pinches of kosher salt, so this is an estimate)
pinch of cumin (again, a critical ingredient, but put in such small quantities that you don't actually taste it
optionally, a pinch of smoked paprika
Stick it all in a food processor and blend until smooth - add more olive oil (or lemon juice, depending on your mood) until it's the desired consistency. (I like mine very thick.)
I always make my own hummus. I love hummus and so does DD (She's been eating it since she was 7 months old.) Here's what I put in. I don't really measure anything, I kind of just put it in to taste. I do it all in the food processor.
2 cans of chickpeas (drained and rinsed)
maybe 3 or 4 cloves of chopped garlic (you can add more or less to your liking)
a few tablespoons of tahini
cumin (I start with a teaspoon. I usually don't put more than that but some people like more)
a little bit of cayenne pepper (maybe start with 1/8 of a teaspoon)
lemon juice
I use the liquid from the chickpeas and extra virgin olive oil to reach the desired consistency.
My aunt puts a cucumber in hers and that's pretty good too.
