nighttime tantrums

DS#1 (3yo) has been having all kinds of problems with napping and going to bed for a while now.  It started before DS#2 was even born.  The baby is still sleeping almost all day, and DS#1 does not seem particularly resentful of him.  He likes to hold him, kiss him, etc.  So I thinking this is mostly a terrible threes problem vs. new baby.  In the past week or so things have been getting out of hand though - he has been getting up several times during the night just crying and screaming.  But nothing is wrong.  If we go in to check on him, he immediately quiets and is fine.  DH recorded DS screaming over the video monitor last night and thinks if we show it to DS, he will realize how ridiculous he is and stop.  What do you all think?  Is that actually a good idea or will it fuel the fire?

Re: nighttime tantrums

  • I would think that would be beyond a 3 year old.  My daughter will do this if she's over tired.  Perhaps he needs to go to bed earlier since he isn't napping well?  I also know that my DD was much more tired when we had the baby since she was being woken up at night by the baby.

  • I don't think he will care if you played the recording for him. Do you have a night time routine for him? My son was pretty much doing the same thing (he is 2 and 1/2) so one night I read to him before bed to see if spending more time with him would help, and it did. We have been doing that for a few weeks now with no problems. So if its bath night he gets a bath, a snack, brushes his teeth and then we read a few books in his rocking chair. So right before the 3rd book I tell him this is the last book and then you go to bed, and he says ok. Maybe because of the new baby he wants more alone time with you? I hope it gets better for you : )
