Friend's BLW baby choked today

My aquaintence (old friend but we haven't been close in a few years) had a big scare today. She does BLW with her 6 month old daughter. Apparently, the baby choked (not just gagged which is somewhat expected) on a piece of banana that she gummed off of the half banana she had on her tray. She went as far as turning blue in her chair, and the mom had to call 911. The mother (my old friend) did not know pediatric first aid, but luckily the next door apartment neighbor did. My friend got her to the next door neighbor as she became unresponsive. Between the neighbor's actions and EMS's quick arrival, the baby is ok. She is in the hospital for observation, but she should be released in the morning.

I don't do BLW, but DS1 was on full table foods very early on. I am not anti-BLW at all, but PLEASE make sure you know how to react to choking if you do practice this. Honestly, I think that any parent regardless of how they feed their child should know pediatric CPR and how to react to choking.  Just something to keep in mind.

Oh my goodness. I can't even imagine, that would be so scary. I do know basic infant cpr, but still terrified of this happening.

  • I had a baby choke on a teething cookie when I was nannying about 12 years ago. I knew what to do, and the baby was okay, but I still consider that one of the scariest moments of my life.

  • That's a really good point! We aren't doing BLW because it scares the pants off me but you're right everyone should be informed on how to do CPR.
  • So scary!

I need to learn baby CPR. Working in a hospital, DH knows CPR for all ages. He described baby CPR to me once and it made me cringe away from learning it.... but DH isn't always around so I need to get my butt into a class.

  • DS had a nasty virus early on and I had to Heimlich him twice from the drainage. Not fun.

  • So scary, I'm so glad the LO is okay. DH and I took the first aid class when we were pregnant but are actually signed up again for another class next week because I worry I wasn't really concentrating as much as I should have while 8 months pregnant. The IL's are taking it with us too. Everyone should know basic first aid if you have a little one. Things can happen so very quickly. Thanks for the reminder.

  • OMG!  I want to do BLW, but this along with the fact that DD already opens her mouth for food, makes me want to just start with purees soon.  I'll be waiting forever if I wait until she can pick up food and put it in her mouth (that's the big part of BLW that leads to choking).  I'll just do finger foods early, once she gets to that point.  But this girl cannot wait for solids that long I think.

  • We're taking a comprehensive baby first aid course before we try BLW!  Thanks for the warning, it's important.

  • How scary! I made my husband take a CPR class with me when I was pregnant. I was way too nervous to bring a kiddo home without brushing up on it.

Every parent should know the heimlich and CPR no matter how you choose to introduce solids, they will eat table food eventually. I know blw scares some, but we loved it with DD. We served her food in appropriate strips to further limit the choking risk and never had an issue.
I agree. Like I said, while I didn't do BLW, my first son was on full table food very early. I have no problem with how anyone decides to feed their child. Maybe I shouldn't have put BLW in the title of the post. I suppose that makes it sound like I am judging it. I think that every parent should understand infant first aid
