TTC after 35

Charting vs. OPK Question

Hi ladies,

I started to chart this month.  Today my chart showed that I ovulated on Day 12, (today is Day 15), but that was the same day that the OPK showed positive.  I thought that a positive OPK meant that ovulation would happen 12 to 24 hours after that.  Am I missing something here?  Can someone explain which would be more accurate?

We had sex on Day 9, 10, and twice on Day 12.  I know we'll have to wait a few weeks to find out, but do you think a BFP is possible?  Or did we miss it since we did not have sex on Day 11?

Many thanks for your help and support!

Re: Charting vs. OPK Question

  • Ovulation occurring within 12 to 24 hours doesnt mean it has to BE 12 hours before it happens. Could be 12 minutes, just means it should be within that window.

Sperm can live inside for days, so yes, pregnancy could be possible.

If you can link your chart that would be super helpful...

I have a short surge like 12 hours short... so sometimes I test positive in the morning and ovulate later that day or the next morning.... it will take some time to figure your cycle out- charting and OPKS are the best way!

you might need to start testing 2x a day to find your surge pattern.... Start on about cd10 and test until your chart says you ovulated...

also you should be covered on the sex part.... don't worry!

  • Hi Pibaby,

What were your temps like on days 11-15?  Are day 13-15 temps higher than before?  I wish I could see your chart, that would make it easier, but this info will help.  Some times, you might have surges but didn't O and will finally do it later, but it is hard to say not knowing your temp info.

I would still be bd'ing just to ensure.  Today and tomorrow, for sure.

Your chances are good though.  Sperm lives up to 5 days, and you have done it a few times, so you have quite a bit of swimmers to assist.

Fx'ed that all goes well....Best of luck to you and your hubby!

  • Sperm live up to 5 days when your cm is "fertile" which means watery or ewcm, they die quickly creamy, dry etc etc. Also an interesting fact the boy sperm die quicker so if you O several days after BD more likely to have a girl, cause girl sperm are tuff!

    Good Luck!

  • Did you do the opks more than once that day. Like pp said sometimes it's really short.
Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.
  • There is nothing off about having a positive OPK the same day as FF determines that you ovulate. I've even had a positive the day after I O'd, and ovulation was clearly indicated by a huge temp spike that stayed up. What is 'supposed' to happen due to law of averages and what actually happens with our bodies can be quite different.

Whenever I charted and used OPKs in a single cycle, my OPK always turned positive the day I ovulated. I tested using FMU, which some don't suggest, but even if I also tested after work, the results stayed the same.
