Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Would you take LO to another doctor?

DS has never been the healthiest kid, colds, ear infections, cough, etc all the time. He has had a cough on and off since he was 6 months. First they told us it was related to his ear infections, but we got tubes in January and it still persists. The doctors say it is normal and will go away, but honestly I think its been way too long without looking into something else. He also has a runny nose 24/7. I want to take LO to an allergist or pulmonologist to get a second opinion. I have a family history of asthma on my side as well.  DH says to listen to our pedi. We don't need a referral for our insurance. Thoughts?

  • Definitely. If your mommy sense is telling you that it could be something else then listen to it. Seek a second opinion.

  • I would get a second opinion and take him to an allergist.  It definitely sounds like allergies could be the culprit especially with the constant runny nose.
  • Yes! Take him to get a second, third, and maybe even a forth opinion.

We went thru something similar with DS, and DH didn't want to see anyone else, he was satisified, I on the other hand was not. So I told DH he could stand back and watch or he could go with me to the 2nd and 3rd opinions. After we saw another doc, DH then realized why I wanted to get other opinions. The 1st doc said to wait, was nothing wrong, etc. and the one we went with said this is serious and he needs surgery.

Hope you get this figured out and your LO gets to feeling better soon! But yes, please take him to get a second opinion.

  • I would...I'm not a doctor...but those are symptoms of allergies as well.

  • I would absolutely take him. My daughter had ear trouble and her pedi said she's fine numerous times when I would bring her in and then she started not being able to hear well. Again the pedi said she was fine and when I asked for a referral she wouldn't give me one but I found out by calling an ENT that we didn't need one so I took her and he said wow I'm surprised the kid can hear and she needs tubes now. Also I brought her in for stomach trouble. She said her stomach felt like it was burning and the pedi gave her miralax. It didn't help and pedi said keep trying. I mentioned it at her ENT appt and he gave me a prescription for Prilosec and she hasn't complained since. Needless to say we have a new pedi. If you feel something needs looked at don't disregard it because a general doctor says so.
  • Thanks ladies. Planning on making an appointment with a pediatric allergist and asthma doctor in the am! Maybe a new pedi too....

we took DD to a pulmonoligst recently for ongoing asthma issues. I was SO happy with the decision!! Trust your gut! And if you happen to be in central Texas go see Dr. fullmer at Austin children's chest associates.

  • I would. I had pneumonia when I was that age and my mom had to take me to 15 doctors before 1 finally said it was more than ear infections or a common cold. By this time I had to spend over a month in the hospital on IV antibiotics.
  • My son had a chronic cough.  The pulmonologist put him on flovent and it was a life-saver...before that he would wake up coughing nightly.  I'd give it a try.
