Cloth Diapering

BG 4.0's Leaking

A little intro first... I occasionally lurk here, but haven't posted before. My DS is 15 weeks old and we use BG 4.0's.

Almost every morning he wakes up with a leak, and has occasional leaks during the day. My guess is that I'm either making them too tight or too loose. Most of the leaks occur at his legs. Should the diaper be super tight? I've been leaving one or two columns of snaps showing because I don't want them to be too tight and hurt him. I've tried using the bigger insert and that makes it leak more frequently.

Re: BG 4.0's Leaking

  • My son is a week older than yours, and a pretty heavy wetter. We have used the big inserts on our 4.0's for months. He's also still on the smallest snap setting, but he's pretty skinny. They need to be fairly tight...you should be able to stick a couple fingers in, but not more.
Are your inserts soaked? If so, definitely move to the big insert or another more absorbent insert. You might need to readjust the snap settings when you do so.

  • As PP said it depends on if the inserts are soaked. If they are you need more absorbancy, if they aren't it is a fit issue. I have found that sometimes my ds is an in-between size and has leaks for a few weeks. I have no idea how to fix it but you aren't alone. Usually it takes a few weeks and he outgrows it.

  • How often are you changing him?

this.  change every 2 hours during the day or after poop. And sometimes, stuffing more inserts makes the legs gap more, causing more leaks.  Could that be the problem?

  • I'll try the longer inserts next time I change him. Should the folded part go in the front or in the back?

I change him roughly every 34 hours sometimes less if he has a big poop, leaks, or if we're leaving the house, so maybe I should change him more often. He is an odd baby who doesn't mind being wet so I often don't realize how long it has been since his last change! Even when he wakes up in the morning every once in awhile soaking wet he doesn't care.

    Thank you!
  • I meant to add, most of the time the inserts are soaking wet even if he doesn't leak, so it does sound like I need the heavier inserts.
  • Cloth should be changed every 2 hours, with over night being the exception.

You may need more absorbent inserts for over night. But it sounds like you would be fine during the day if you just changed more often.

Ok, thanks : I had been changing him on the same schedule as when he was in disposables.

I used the thicker liner last night about 11.5 hours and he woke up dry!!
