How to clean poop stains

Ok, so what I'm doing just isn't working.  How are you cleaning up those poop stains?

Re: How to clean poop stains

  • Okay so this might sound crazy, but I have started to swear by it in my house and so far it has worked like a charm. Palmolive Oxy---but it has to be the blue Oxy kind. This stuff (with a little bit of scrubbing with the palm of my hand--or I suppose you could use a brush) gets poop, formula spit up, baby food and anything else out of EVERYTHING! Depending on the stain I might wear a pair of rubber gloves if I don't want to touch it.

I do not have a single piece of clothing stained thus far. It works even when the stain has been sitting all day or night. I have been using this and then just washing whatever it is I need in the laundry like normal.

I started off using it one time on accident because I didn't have any other soap near my stationary tub when trying to get a poop stain out. Now I always keep a bottle in my house.

  • I use Lustoil, but it is NOT natural and smells like oil. This is for the really, really, really bad stains. If I use this on DS's clothes, I may wash them more than once before he wears them. But it gets out ANYTHING.

For most of the poops stains, the Dreft spot treatment stuff works really well. Then I wash in All Free and Clear. I'm not a big Dreft fan, but their spot treatment works wonders.

  • I spray stains with Oxy laundry spray, wash on hot with some Oxy powder and a little white vinegar. Make sure to check that a stain is out before putting it in the dryer, which will set it.
  • I rinse the outfit immediately then spray with resolve laundry spot treatment. It's worked so far.

  • when we have a poop load of laundry i don't use his soap i use All Stainlifter and if its really bad i will do a spot treatment with the laundry detergent too. it works for us. its the one i have to use for my clothes and FI's because he works in a machine shop and plays football, so there is always grease and grass stains on his clothes. but saying that, DS doesn't have a skin sensitivity to it.

  • We cloth diaper so I use BacOut on the poop diapers and have found it works great on any other stains too.

Since we CD, our only poop stains are on diapers, and they don't bother me.

I've heard sunning works wonders, though.

  • Rinsing and laying clothes out in the sun works! I was skeptical but I tried it and was amazed!

  • I rinse out the poop and while still wet I apply Caldrea (spelling) Sweet Pea Stain remover, let it set for 10 minutes then throw it in the wash...we've never had a stain stick. Yippie!!

  • I do a combo of the fel naptha soap (that OP mentioned) and a spot of Dawn dish soap on the stain if it's bad (amazing stuff, they use it to clean bird feathers after oil spills).  I usually always throw in a scoop of Oxy clean with my wash, too.  Not perfect, but most stains come out okay.

This is what we do too.  LOVE BacOut.  Works great for blood stains too.

  • I have a prewash setting on my washing machine that seems to take everything out! Granted we haven't started food yet. I might have to invest in some pretreat stuff then!
  • We cloth diaper so poop stains only happen on our diapers. When they annoy me I turn to either oxy clean in the winter or rinse and sun in the spring, summer and fall. They come out like a charm. Don't forget to put them out in the sun while they're still wet. It will get out old stains as well.

I spray with a stain remover immediately and then add OxiClean (the powder) to every load. Works great so far!

I do this too! It even works on stains that have set in the dryer.

  • Sunshine!  Others mentioned it, and I'll throw my name in too... I went January to May with some bright orange cloth diapers, then finally took them out when the sun showed up again.  I was so skeptical, these things were stained pretty bad (I mean, they're diapers), and those stains had set for months!

Within 30 minutes in bright sun, BAM! brand new diapers!  I was definitely doing a happy dance in the yard.  I still haven't gotten around to setting up a clothes line, I just laid them in the grass for like an hour on each side (then tossed them in the dryer on high heat for a few minutes to make sure no critters were hanging out).

They do need to be wet though, I tried being lazy and just laying them in the sun dry and didn't work as well.

  • I've been scrubbing with Ivory soap, hanging them, then washing once I was satisfied the stain was out.

However, once I left a sink full of stained items because I was SO EFFING SICK OF CLEANING THEM, and a few days (I know! How lazy am I!?) the stains were magically gone. I didn't even scrum them. They were just submerged in water.
