Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Waking up at night! Help!

My son is 8.5 mo. old and is waking up 3-4 times a night. He wants to nurse almost every time he wakes up. Right before he started crawling (6.5 mo.) He was sleeping like a champ. But as soon as he could crawl, this pattern of waking up constantly started. I know it's normal for them to wake up more as they learn to crawl.. But this is starting to take a huge toll on me, (especially after TWO MONTHS)  Any advice to help us out?

Thanks :)

  • If he's waking up to nursing it could be because his new activity level is making him burn off the milk faster so he's hungrier sooner.  Have you tried rice cereal mixed with BM?  Maybe he'd sleep longer if he was full longer.  I know it worked with DD.

  • I think I read it lasts an average of 3 months after they start crawling. Good luck mama!

  • I second sleep training (your preffered method) and also try to increase intake during the day - see if you can get another feeding in or add an ounce or so to each bottle..

This is a myth and if it's in a bottle, it's a choking hazard :(

My suggestion, do a little sleep training. Find something that you are comfortable with and be 100% consistent. Babies do tend to wake up more when they've learned a new skill like crawling but at this point, I don't think it should be affecting his sleep this much.

THIS. I second the choking hazard thing. He prob doesn't need to eat that frequently at night. Could it be habitual waking at this point?

  • If he is waking up that many times a night, he probably can not fall back asleep on his own. My DD is just over 6 months old and when she wakes up, she associates being bottlefed with being able to go back to sleep. My pediatrician said there is no need for them to be fed at night, and that babies should eat during the day and associate night time for sleeping. My DD wakes up 2-3 times a night. I was recommend the book "How To Solve Your Childs Sleep Problems" by Richard Ferber. I am starting the book tonight. When a baby wakes in the middle of the night, and doesn't know how to put himself back to sleep, they need help getting back to sleep. If you nurse him, he associates that with getting back to sleep. Good Luck!
