Every summer, we visit my ILs who live eight hours away, and we bring my husband's two kids. We stay for a week, and I dread it every year.
Not only is their house incredibly hot because they have air conditioning they refuse to use unless I beg them so that, say, I can swaddle the baby and not have her overheat, but FIL is about the least hospitable human being. He spends the entire week lecturing us on how not to mess up his house, and yells at the kids for being kids, and won't listen to an answer that I give him but asks my husband for confirmation every single time. Oh, and they totally have the money for the air conditioning. They're just stubborn.
Anyway, the most recent issue? Our family of five has done 3 loads of laundry in three days...with a baby. Who spits up. Everywhere. To me, this is great because even when the kids aren't around we do one load per day. Well, FIL has informed DH that we're doing too much laundry and need to cut back. He also scolded DH for spending too much time...ahem, 3 hours...at our friends' house.
Why stay here? We have an offer from our friends to stay at their place and it would be awesome because the kids are friends with their daughter, and they use their air conditioning and have a pool, and are actually hospitable. But we can't stay there. Why? Because even though birth mom was friends with these people for years, she doesn't approve of us staying with them because they're a "bad influence". Shoot me, please.
And thanks if you read all of this. I'm losing my mind here, haha. At least they're not telling me how to be a mom all that much...

I would be frustrated too...I'm so thankful my IL's are amazing and everyone lives here in the same town so we don't have to travel to see them. Hang in there...it's only a few more days.
Also, I'd say screw the birth mom and stay with your friends. How bad can they be if you guys really like them?

I know, right? Unfortunately, she could get us in huge trouble if we did that. But I'm very tempted! And I'm thinking Amelia and I might stay there, at least. FIL lectures me, too. It's ridiculous.
