coughing on bottles

My little girl has been coughing on practically every bottle the past 3 weeks. I was told she may be biting the nipple or have lots of drool from the top teeth which are supposedly getting ready to come in I can't see a darn thing, to be honest. She has a history of acid reflux as well but she was doing this even when she was still on her meds. Feeding times are stressful, I'm always on my guard in case she starts choking. But wtf! It's driving me crazy/scaring me. Please tell me it's just a phase. We haven't changed nipple speeds. We recently upgraded to the big bottles she finally takes 5 oz wooooo but I don't think that would make the milk come out any faster. Blah. Anyone else have a coughy chokey baby recently? I know at this age they start to do weird things so any advice is appreciated! Can ya tell im a clueless first time mama!?

Re: coughing on bottles

  • My DS, Jayson, had started spitting up again. I noticed he was sucking very hard to get his formula from the bottle. We changed to a faster flow nipple, and voila! Everything is fine

  • My ds doesn't cough on them but sometimes he sucks so hard his face turns a blotchy red. That leads to gagging sometimes. Maybe try the faster nipple flow if you notice her trying extra hard. I'm at the fasted flow so I'm not sure if there's anything I can do. Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies. I do have a fast flow I can try. She has not taken them well before though, I tried a few weeks ago. I always thought choking meant the milk was coming out too fast, never thought she could actually be sucking too hard. Hopefully it works or else I'm back at square one!
  • DD has been coughing when drinking lately too. We have multiple flows and no matter what she still does it. I'm thinking its a phase. She does it the most with water.
