Baby falling

So Dagny went straight to walking around 9 months.  She never crawled or anything.  She's really good at walking now, great balance, can bend over and pick things up and likes to carry things around with her.  However, she does still lose her balance sometimes and fall, but it's not like a sit down on her butt fall it's a straight back or straight forward fall that (if she's not caught in time) results in a serious head conk.  She also can't get herself into a standing position if she doesn't have something close by to pull up on.  I feel that these skills come from crawling but since she didn't/won't crawl I don't know how to help her develop them.  It just makes me so nervous because even though I'm with her constantly while she's walking (with my hands out ready to catch) sometimes I miss or sometimes she just goes down faster than I expect.  She had a really hard fall tonight, I've never seen her cry so hard (she puked from crying so hard) and I'm just so scard that something bad will happen.

I don't know if anyone has any experience or any thoughts on how I can help her but I think mostly I just needed to type out my fears so thanks for reading :)

So sorry that sounds scary and I hope she is okay.

Has she ever crawled? I bought my twins one of those pop up tunnels for their birthday. They love crawling though it. It took a couple of demonstrations from me. Will she crawl up the stairs if you let her? That is something my LOs OT suggested for them under close supervision of course.
They still need to use something to pull to stand so I am no help there.

It might be worth bringing up to her pedi if you are that concerned.

ETA. FYI My LOs don't have a similar issue but these are some of the things we are doing to encourage them to crawl.

Nope she never crawled. We go to Gymboree and they have the tunnels and all that with toys to entice and she sees the other babies there crawl, she just has no interest in doing it herself. We don't have stairs either. Thank you so much for the suggestions though. Maybe I will try and do some more demonstrating for her and that will give her something to work towards.

It is scary. If it hasn't changed by her 1 year appt in a few weeks I will bring it up to her pedi.

I don't mind that she wants to walk everywhere but the whole not knowing how to fall or sit down is not so fun.

  • Thomas was pretty much the same story.  Went straight to walking at 9 months, no crawling and no attempt to crawl.  He does crawl now, but only to get to something to pull up on so he can walk (ha).

Honestly, what I found worked was sitting him in the floor with something interesting out of reach (like his pacifier or the dog's collar).  He had to figure out how to get to it without me helping him to get up.  Or, just sitting in the middle of the floor so he has to work to get to something to pull up on.  There was a lot of complaining and whining, but he did figure it out.

I think his crawling has helped with him understanding to bend when he falls, and has minimized those epic falls that you're talking about.  GL!

Sorry I was no help. One more trick the OT taught me to help my LOs get from standing to sitting without falling. . . When they were standing up on something I would hand them a small toy just below their reach so they would have to bend down a little to get it. I slowly worked up to handing the toy to them lower and lower to help build their strength and confidence.

Thanks for letting me know Dagny isn't the only one! I think I will work with her on crawling more and not give into her tantrums as quickly. Hopefully that will help.
