Am I alone?

After reading the food post below am I the only one with a baby who still is a weird eater? He will eat bananas and baby finger foods but that's it other than pured stuff. What can I do to encourage him more? So far he puts it in his mouth and spits it out with a face like I'm trying to feed him chalk! Do I just keep trying then give him pured stuff? He's 10.5 months old btw if that matters.

Re: Am I alone?

  • We tried stage 3 baby food for a while before starting table food. Stage 3 food tend to have small soft pieces to encourage chewing.

  • First, I put finger foods on a spoon and give it him because some things I feed him are hard to pick up (i.e. strawberries, bananas, my aunt's green beans).  Then, I put those same foods in my hand to make them easier to pick up and encourage him to pick them up.  He gets 3.5oz of purees 3x a day still.

  • Try toast spread with purees. Also, I nannied for boy girl twins. The girl took to grownup food with ease and the boy took a loooong time to warm up to them. Just keep offering them and don't make a big deal about it. If you're eating something, you can offer a bit and say, "Want a bite?" Food tastes so much better when you're stealing it from Mom. I swear, Howell will eat anything I'm eating of it comes off my plate but if I put it on his tray, he's all, "Whatever."

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

DS won't even attempt to put finger foods in his mouth, besides puffs and mum mum's. I just keep offering, hoping he'll become interested soon. I still feed purees after the failed finger food attempts.

    This exactly.

  • What really helped DS was I cook pasta noodles (large curly ones) until really soft and use pur?e as the sauce.

  • We just kind of worked our way up to different foods. Started with the easiest ones like banana and avocado, then slowly graduated to steamed sweet potato, apples, carrots, green beans, and pasta. It took a month or so to really master those foods, and now she can handle almost anything as long as it's cut up and easy to gum. She pretty much refuses all purees now. Just keep offering things from your plate and experimenting. Gagging is really how they learn how to eat. I know it can be scary but it's all a learning experience. Best of luck!
