3rd Trimester

Being Induced....

I'm a FTM and I was wondering what your stories were from being induced. My 40w appointment is tomorrow and I'm going to ask my doctor about setting a date for 41w or 42w. This way there is an 'end game' for everything, if my little boy proves to be stubborn as the next couple of weeks play out. Those of you who have already had this convo with your doctors, or have been induced, when do your doctors generally agree on inducing? Has anyone gone past 42w? I know it all depends on your LO's health, your own health, and progression of your body. I'm jc as to what your experiences have been with it. TIA!

Re: Being Induced....

  • I am a FTM also.

I didn't/don't want to be induced.

I was diagnosed as high risk and am going to be induced between 39 and 40 weeks. I was very upset when I was told this. I cried for about 2 weeks. I have now made peace with it.

I would try to avoid induction as much as possible if it were me.

I would schedule it as far out as your OB is willing to go.

  • I am high risk and was induced with both of my previous pregnancies at 39 weeks and will be at 38 weeks unless these little boys decide to come earlier. They needed a controlled environment and to have the right doctors on stand by just in case.

I had a friend who was induced (her decision) at 40 weeks. Her doc was on board as he was going out of town for two weeks and she pushed for it. It probably helped that she was a nurse at that hospital.

Another friend who had her baby in February was induced at 42 weeks as the baby didnt want to come out on her own. I believe she talked to her OB at 39/40 weeks and they got her on the schedule.

I think a general rule is to not let you go past 42 weeks. Also, with my inductions I didnt end up with a c-section which is what I am finding with people I have talked to is a fear of theirs. A c-section is on the table regardless of if you were induced or not.

  • I was induced with my first at 39 weeks and if I can help it, I will never do it again. The contractions are much more intense than regular labor and there is no steady build up, just a bam there they are full force. My second I had naturally and IMO it was much easier. GL!

  • It will depend on what your doctor believes is "best practice" with regard to induction. If your pregnancy is still going well and you aren't developing any risks, they may want you to go 10-14 days in hopes of going into labor on your own. This happened to my mom with all three of us and her labor ended up being quick (once it started) and without complications. I have had two friends recently who scheduled C/S for their 41st week because they just needed to be done, and both had longer labors and complications with dilating. That's not to say that's the norm, but it was a shared experience between the two. My doctor doesn't like to deliver babies past 10 days PDD, so we'll have to broach the topic then if we get there. I hope all goes well! Best of luck, you're almost there!

  • Well my induction was a bit different because I ended up severely ill with pre-e in the very beginning of my third trimester and after like 36 hours they had to do an emergency c-section. I have heard others say that some times when you are induced it can go either way.

Hopefully you go into labor today on you own :)

  • I finally set an induction for 10 days past EDD with my first. My water ended up breaking 8 hours prior anyway, so I didn't need it. My doc would not have let me go much past 42 weeks.

I had an induction with my third due to history of rapid labors... It went fine, but I wish I hadn't looking back. I have no "Then I woke your dad up and we raced around to pack our bags" story for my third. Just, we got up, got ready, I put on my makeup and we reported to the hospital. Very ... scheduled.

Edited to add: And as you likely know - inductions for FTM's particularly can lead to increased c-section rates....

  • I was induced with my daughter 8 years ago. I had no issues, pitocen was started and water broke at around 10 am, she was born 623.

Given the option I'd like to be induced this time around bc I have 2 kids at home I need plans for.

  • As you said, it depends on the baby's health, mom's health, and other factors. The doctor's beliefs are a big indicator, too. My midwife won't let me go past 42 weeks.

I was 41w 1 day when I was induced with my daughter (I had an OB back then, and that was his limit).

  • I can have an "elected" induction at 39w... or wait and see how long she holds out. 42w is the max then she will be evicted. lol
  • My MIL had her 2nd baby at 43 weeks and her 3rd baby at 41 weeks. Mind you, this was back in the late 70's/early 80's. Both of them were breech (feet first) and she thinks that's why she went past her due date. No pressure on the cervix from the noggin. Smile She had both of those babies vaginally...feet first and everything. Crazy by today's standards. I, on the other hand, was induced for first two pregnancies at 37 and 38 weeks. As other women have mentioned, that Pitocin really makes contractions stronger and more painful. You also tend to be bedridden once hooked up to the Pitocin.  Most hospitals won't let you get out of bed once hooked up to the IV. Maybe it's just me. I would rather walk around and have my freedom. I wouldn't be in a hurry to get Pitocin. You can always try to induce naturally (although that doesn't have a high success rate).  You can ask your OB about Cervidil to ripen cervix and see if that gets things started.
  • I have friends whose doctors have allowed them, with monitoring, to go past 42 weeks in order to avoid an induction.

  • Thanks all! That really helped!!!

  • I have an induction scheduled for tomorrow 41w and 1 day.  I have been really on the fence about it.  I'm a FTM also, and have been worried about the increased risk of c-section, however there is an increasing risk of c-section every day past the EDD anyway.  Also, I had an NST yesterday and my son didn't get an A+ like he did last time - more like a B or so but it indicates that things might not be totally ideal in there anymore.  As time goes on the placenta doesn't function as well, so complications like merconium inhalation increase.  There is also an increase in stillbirths after 41 weeks, however my impression was that doctors tend to overhype this a bit compared to actual numbers when you do research.
