Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Afraid of everything

DD all the sudden is terrified of everything. She will cling on to me if she hears something like a truck, motorcycle, dishes falling in the sink, blenders, DH downstairs working, and even the door shutting. I mean everything. Did you LO's have a similar phase? How long did it last? Is there anything I can do besides taking her to show her it's not scary?

Re: Afraid of everything

  • We are going through that now. All I try to do is re-enforce tthat she is home and all is well. I take her to show her what made the noise. Now she only gets nervous with unexpected noises, but she will not let me out of 3ft of her. I am ok with it,,sooner rather than later she wont' want such closeness:(

  • Those all have something in common - loud (and sometimes sudden) noises.  DD also hates loud noises.  And, honestly, it IS scary to a toddler.  They don't have the cognitive ability to handle it the way adults do (and there is research that suggests it's questionable to just teach them to ignore more and more sensory input.)  So, I strive for a balance- I warn her so she can go to another room if I turn on the blender, I sympathize and offer comfort if a falling dish scared her (not undue, just a quick cuddle and "I know that sound was scary, but it's over and everything will be ok"), and closing doors more quietly.

  • On mobile, so I can't see how old your LO is...my 15 month old has just started this in the past month or so. She literally had a breakdown when my mom used an electric knife recently. The vacuum has been scaring her lately too. I'm hoping its just a phase.
