Shipping to Canada?

Question: for shipping to Canada from the US, do some things have certain restrictions on them?

For instance, I'm selling some garage door opener remotes on eBay and I don't normally ship to Canada but someone asked me if I would. I can mail them in a padded envelope for a little more than what it would cost to mail it domestically, but I didn't want to say yes to the person if there ended up being some sort of tax or fees. I would end up treating this like I would be mailing a fat letter, kwim?

Re: Shipping to Canada?

  • I ship stuff all the time to Canada, DH is Canadian, and all of his family is there. They usually just ask if anything flamable, etc in the package at the post office. The only time we had an issue was when DH won some Ribs at work, he still lived in Canada and they got held up at the border twice. I think packages go through customs and they can be opened etc.

  • When you mail a package anything other than a letter across the border you have to fill out a customs form saying what's inside. 9 times out of 10 i its mailed usps there won't be any duty taxes. However, the gov't can randomly audit or inspect any packages and add duty. For online transactions the buyer just has to agree to assume those risks. It wont cost YOU anything extra
