Pumpers, is this gross? And others, feel free to chime in.

I'm assuming so, but I don't really know how a pump works since I didn't, so I could be really wrong. We have a room for pumping down the hall from my office and one of my coworkers opens it if needed. Apparently she just had a couple come through and ask to use it, and then they asked where the pump was. Are pumps interchangeable? Or is it a gross thought? I thought all the components had to be washed independently? Thoughts?

It depends on the type of pump, but yes some are interchangeable. Parts shouldn't be shared, maybe there are extra pump kits? It does sound a little weird, what kind of office do you work in? Were they just random strangers?

It was a random couple coming through the building, and it's a University campus so is required to have pumping rooms available to anyone. No pumps or kits provided, just the space. It sounds odd thinking there may be places that provide those. And when she said we didn't have it they asked if anywhere on campus had one.

I would not use someone else's pump parts, but thats just me.  I know people who have used 2nd hand pumps, which voids the warranty and all of that, plus the safety/cleaning issues.

Me neither, there's just no way to be sure.

I might be completely wrong, or totally stalkerish right now, but I thought you worked at college or something to the sort.  I would not expect a pump to be available that could be used by multiple people.  Even if there was, the parts would not be sharable to my knowledge.  I find it gross to share pumps, especially the parts that need to be cleaned every day.  I could never get all the crevasses.  I know my work does not provide a pump, they barely provided a room.  It was a full storage room with a pipe dripping in the ceiling that I have to be careful not to bump the trash barrel that was catching the dripping water.  It was a lovely and calming experience.

Yup, at a University, in the nursing department yes, but it's still a stretch to think we'd provide that stuff. LOL

The only thing I would consider using from someone else would be the motor portion.  The tubing/flanges/etc -no way!

And if you have all that stuff why would you be borrowing the pump motor, especially since my guess is that the rest of the stuff if pretty pump/motor specific.

this just makes no sense to me.  Why would anyone think there would be a pump available, and why would any place provide a pump?

Exactly, and I know, from the board, that most of you all that are/were pumping brought your own. My coworker said they sounded Asian, and so may actually have been international students just arriving on campus. Do they provide them Internationally?

  • I feel like I'm at the Ritz Carlton if I find  place with a space designated for pumping... If there was a pump there to use... I'd feel more like it was a Motel 6... Unless it was a hospital and that sort of thing was common. I would never casually just use a pump that wasn't mine. But, that's me.

  • That is very strange. If you are a breastfeeding/pumping mom, you should understand the basics of a pump and that its not just like one of those blood pressure machines at the pharmacy... just pop your boobs in and collect the milk in a cup - first come, first served! WEIRD.

Did anyone else think that maybe they have some deviant BFing/pumping fetish?

  • The University I work for will provide a hospital-grade pump in a lactation room, all you have to do is provide your own parts (tubes, etc).
