Washing toys that say do not wash

So my sons favorite toy is was green stuffed elephant stroller toy, he loves to chew on it, I've had to put it in the washing machine a few times to keep it clean. I just went to target and bought a new one because his old one is getting ratty and i just noticed that the tag said to only wipe with a damp cloth and do not submerge in water. What would you do? Whould you still machine wash on occasion?

  • I have been washing her toys like this on delicate in a lingerie bag and just not drying. I feel like if it can't handle that she doesn't need to play with it and I don't want her playing with slobber-saturated toys. :)

  • Am putting all items in in the washing machine (in pillow case) and dryer after reading that advice on one of the msg boards one person's response about washing stuffed animals. The person worked in a preschool and that was how they washed all stuffed animals, multiple times each week.

  • I wash anything that isn't made of paper. :)  If it makes it through, then it was meant to be.  If not, oh well.  If a kid touches it, then it needs to be able to be machine washed or submerged in soapy water.  DS1 has attached to a "lovey" stuffed mouse that says it's not machine washable, but it has been washed a few dozen times with no issues.  Delicate cycle in a pillow case if you are really worried.
