Placenta encapsulation

Has anyone tried or known someone who has tried placenta encapsulation? Specifically ingesting capsules of dehydrated placenta postpartum? Pros/cons?

Re: Placenta encapsulation

  • I am planning to do it this time around.  I found a local doula service that will do the encapsulation.  From the research I have done it can help fend off PPD, provide you with energy, nutrients and help boost milk supply.  The only con I see is that the doula service requests delivery.  I am basically going to have to send my husband to drop off my placenta to the doula service.

  • I thought about it at one time but I'm a planned c-section so I don't know if I can get the placenta or not?

  • I don't know anyone personally, but I follow some people's blogs who have and they loved it. I don't think there are any cons, that I know of. I am doing it because my baby blues with my DD were out of this world bad and I want to do everything possible to prevent it. It is also supposed to help with energy, so I am all about it. I have already looked into a place that will do it. It's like $200, but completely worth it because I was miserable for 3 weeks after I had DD.

  • I have decided to do it. I see so many benefits. I just hope I can swallow the capsules without being totally grossed out!

  • I'm totally doing it because I'm a dirty hippie.

What I'm most worried about is placenta burps. You know how you get vitamin burps after you take your vitamins? Yeah. Gag me. I'll just take them on a full stomach, I suppose.

I read a funny article about how placentophagy is a bunch of BS, but I don't care. I at least want the option, given my history of anxiety/depression. It's tough to study the effects (like the alcohol studies we've been talking about in the "wine" thread) because obviously the FDA doesn't regulate your placenta, but I figure it can't hurt.

Except for the placenta burps. Those will hurt me.

I promise to never forget that this little dude deserves just as much love after the baby comes as he has now.

  • i plan on doing it. with my depression/anxiety past, i'm really going to try any little thing that could possibly help even if it ends up simply having a placebo effect.

i googled doulas and placenta encapsulation in my area and found a few recs not that close to me, but another nestie actually shared her doula's info with me and i think i'm going to go that route.

I was thinking about it also because I had PPD after my son. I don't know how to go about finding someone who would do it. I also don't know if I can breastfeed. I have PCOS and couldn't make it work no matter how hard I tried with my first. I don't know if it is worth it if I can't breastfeed. However, I would do anything to beat the post baby blues so it may be worth it either way. I'll have to keep researching it.

There's a site called Doula Match that can connect you with doulas in your area, and I think you can narrow the search by services performed, like placenta encapsulation.

Thank you! I am going to look into that now.

Don't give them any ideas...wouldn't put it past them lol.

You guys totally need to do a follow up post after birth about this. For some reason this makes me queasy and kinda grosses me out, but I am still interested in the process and science of the whole thing. Follow up post in January please!!!

  • I hadn't heard of this until a few months ago from my best friend who was pregnant, and now has had her baby 2 weeks ago. It shocked me she was going to do it, but after listening to the benefits I was intrigued. She was most hoping it would help with depression, as it runs in her family. It's about 200 plus a pick up fee at delivery. Her OB told her not to do it because she could get the same benefits from vitamins. So I was hoping to see if it helped her and then make my decision to move forward. Back to the drawing boards.
