Pregnant after 35

fetal movement

Hello all,

It's been a while since I've written but you ladies always seem to help set my mind at ease.  I'm 28 weeks pregnant and definitely feel my baby girl every day. When I stop and lay down and concentrate, she often moves more than 10 times in less than 30 minutes (I'd heard 10 movements in 2 hrs is considered acceptable), but the thing is, I've never once felt any movement above my navel. In fact, the only movement I feel tends to be lower. I have felt a sort of pressure/stretching feeling which makes me feel like my belly is going to pop a few times (above the navel) and friends have said, "that's the baby moving" but it doesn't feel at all the same as the thumping type movement I feel lower. My OB does not seem concerned and I forget exactly what he said for a possible reason but is it fairly normal for all the movement I feel to always be lower (i.e. above my pelvic bone but below the navel)?  I've heard some people say they try and push out their bellies to get a response.  I also know that some people at my stage in pregnancy can see the baby pushing out (i.e. foot, hand, etc.) my husband has only been able to feel my baby moving once and I want to be able to share this with him.  Am I just being impatient?

 Have a wonderful day!

I think you might just have to wait longer. In my last pregnancy even right up to the end I didn't feel a lot high because she was breech so I would feel pressure (her head jammed in my ribs) but it wasn't like foot/arm kicking. Plus at this stage it may not feel like it but you do still have some extra room for moving in there. I would guess in a few more weeks movement will be obvious to your SO.

And about pushing on your belly to get them to move....my LO will stop movement if I do that. It's like he's thinking "that's creepy why is it moving".

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for your response...I must admit, I had to laugh when you commented that he's thinking "that's creepy why is it moving."  I was just trying different things to try and get our baby to respond so my DH can feel her movement too.  Sometimes he'll put my hand where I feel her kick but he can't feel her yet.  Guess I just need to be patient.  Thanks!

  • I wonder if the placenta is higher, preventing you from feeling much there.  just a thought.

With my daughter I never (Thank God) had kicks to the ribs or pressure like I couldn't breathe as some women do during pregnancy.  It was always centered around my naval area or below and for that I was thankful.  Maybe it is just your frame and the way you are carrying?  Hopefully you will luck out and your ribcage will be left alone :)

Enjoy feeling that little one squirm no matter where she is located at the moment :)  Such fun!

  • I'm just a few days behind you and I also have only felt baby move above the navel twice. Two weeks ago I saw her head push out the side of belly a few times. Last week she changed to head down for a few hours and kicked me up high. Then, bam, she went head up again.

I've read that I should not be concerned about her turning head down until 35 weeks.

I'd also like to give my husband and I some more views of baby moving my belly, but honestly I've only seen her push out my belly about 3 times. Must be those abs of steel :>

Perhaps at 30-33 weeks there will be more outside movement.

  • Well, it's nice to know that what I'm experiencing is fairly normal.  My DH was actually concerned that maybe baby isn't moving enough but I think that's just because I don't mention it every time.  If she does kick (even down low), I try to wait until she's done it at least 2-3 times before I tell him to feel - then sometimes I'll feel one more kick but he doesn't usually feel it.  I don't think I'm carrying low but as long as she's healthy (which she seems to be), I'll just say thanks for all the support these months!

  • I'm 24 weeks and a few days and I, too, feel all the movement below the belly button. I know that I'm not as far along as you, but I think it's just their size and where the placenta is attached that determines where we feel what and when. I had a friend whose placenta was attached at the front (I think?) and said she didn't feel a bunch of movement the entire pregnancy. I've also heard some ladies on here mention that drinking a big glass of ice water gets their babies moving - maybe that will help you! Good luck!
