bathtub freakouts

Do all LO's go through a stage where they HATE the tub?  I don't think we did anything to cause this, but it's been going on for a couple months now.  Just a stage or can I do something to stop it?  How did you handle it?

Re: bathtub freakouts

  • My DS went through a stage where he hated running water.  So I would fill the tub than bring him in.  It was just a stage for him an was over relatively quickly

  • DS hates when I give him a bath. He's fine with DH, just not me. but he did go through a phase where he hated it no matter who was giving him a bath. we finally figured out that he didn't like his face to be wet from splashing, washing, etc and we determined that to be the cause of the prebath drama as we called it! once we figured to keep his face as dry as possible it was better.
maybe there is some part of bath time that is causing the meltdown??

  • Ours started freaking out recently when it didn't used to bother him at all. We have started getting in with him again for his baths (we did this sometimes when he was very little and had stopped when he got big enough to sit and stand). It may not be the best solution but it has curbed is freak outs for right now.

  • Mine doesn't freak out but he refuses to sit in the tub now and he has always hated getting the shampoo rinsed out.  Now that I'm home for summer break he's usually awake when I shower and had been saying "up, up."  I finally decided to bring him into the shower with me thinking he'd hate it, but he actually loves it and it's easier than baths.  The shower doesn't hit him directly, but he still gets wet enough to clean and we have a detachable shower head to rinse him off and play with.

  • I have been lucky enough to have a water baby.  Shower, bath, sprinklers, pool... it doesnt matter, he loves the water.  When he first started baths when he could sit up, DH would get in with him and the million bath toys and play first, once the playing was over we would wash him up and get him out.  It made it where baths werent a chore but were fun first.

  • My LO did the same thing from about 18-20 months.  AND she wouldn't sit, she would ONLY stand.  Part of it was due to some painful diaper rashes at one time.

When she discovered bubbles that you blow outside I decided to use this to my advantage.  Now we put just a little bit of baby wash in the tub as the water is flowing and she gets all kinds of bubbles.  By the time they disappear she is distracted (and sitting) playing with all the other toys.  Good luck!
