So, Cade decided to start solids yesterday. He picked a piece of my strawberry shortcake and nommed away on the cake (he didn't eat any though). So, now we're going to start adding new foods to our diet for him. What types of foods are you trying and adding in? I was thinking of doing an array of fruits and veggies then some carb type stuff and meats. So, suggestions?
Re: BLWers
We didn't really intend to do BLW, but G just preferred "chunkier" purees so we started doing BLW instead. Some of his favorites:
Avocado
Steamed sweet potato "sticks"
Hard boiled egg chunks
Steamed Carrots
Various melon chunks
Whole wheat pasta
Chicken (poached with onion, carrot and celery in the water)
Baked apples with cinnamon
Happy Baby brand Rice Cake Snacks (Target sells them)
Totally what I plan on doing. My husband eats like a toddler and I wanted idea to vary my diet so that Cade will try more than peas and corn (the only "veggies" my husband eats). Plus adding in some healthier foods for me and the kids.
This. The biggest seller for BLW for me was only making one supper. I just plan our meals so that most of it is BLW friendly. Her first meal was spears of baked potato and steak. She loves ribs with most of the meat taken off (I think she likes the feel on her gums). I give her a variety of whats on my plate as long as its safe. She actually eats/swallows the most when eating over cooked steamed veggies (broccoli, carrots, cauliflower) or soft fruit like banana.
If you're worried, the book is a pretty quick read. There's also a website that explains it all in less depth, babyledweaning.com
I've read both. Just looking for ideas to meal plan. My husband thinks veggies is potatoes. So, I usually make 2 different meals, but I just wanted to get a good idea for different things.
This sounds like my DH. If it was up to him he would eat pizza every day. i just cook what I want to eat and give it to him. Most of the time he ends up eating it. I also like to hide veggies in stuff to make sure DH eats his vegetables. Add chopped vegetables to pasta sauces, lasagna, meatballs, etc. fajitas are a popular choice too, stir fry chicken with bell peppers, onion and hot peppers and serve with tortillas, avocado and salsa. The great thing about BLW is that LO will eat anything. DD grabbed some raw onion from my salad that I wasn't eating and ate it! So stop making two meals, cook what is healthy for you and LO and let your husband deal with it, if he's hungry he'll eat.
I also try to buy one new fruit or vegetable I'm not used to every time I grocery shop to add some variety. This week I got baby bok choy . LO loved it, DH not so much, he only ate one piece but at least I try to give him something healthy with every meal. I think the most important thing is to expose LO to a range of foods so they don't end up with the same unhealthy habits as dad, hopefully dad's habits will improve too!
I usually just give her part of whatever we're eating. We eat a lot of veggies, though. She's had:
avocado, sweet potato fries & chunks, green beans, strawberries, banana, squash, zucchini, carrots, hummus, brown rice, couscous, pizza bread(for her it was whole grain bread with pizza sauce), whole grain noodles... probably more, but I can't really remember at this point.
So you're just looking for a list of veggies?
asparagus, sweet potatoes, eggplant, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, beets etc. Go to the produce section of your supermarket (or a farmer's market) and try something new. if you haven't cooked it before, google it to learn how to prepare it.
They don't need teeth! DD1 didn't have teeth until 10 months and she was on straight table food by 8 months (we started with some purees). Their gums are hard, they can handle more than you think.
D really likes grilled zucchini sticks, he alternates between holding it and gumming it or sucking on it like a straw.
We also do frozen blueberries, strawberries and bananas in chunks. He likes them frozen for his gums.
Yellow squash was not as big of a hit. He did like butternut squash though.
He did like radishes, steamed carrot sticks, avocado, grilled green beans, apple slices, mango.
I'm trying to add variety to our diet as well. So I'm just trying 2-3 new fruits and vegetables each week. Some we like (butternut squash), some are not a hit (DH hates radishes).
