Parenting after a Loss

Zombie

Today is a rough one. DD was up until midnight after napping from 6:309:30. Then she was up at 2, 5 and 7. I'm a complete zombie today. I keep telling myself it will get better, but days like today I want to run for the hills.

When did your LO's start to get somewhat on a schedule or sleep longer stretches? I know they're all different, but I need that switch to flip where she wants to let mommy sleep.

  • B started STTN from 10 to 6 around 3.5 months. Before then starting around 2 months old he was sleeping 5 hour stretches and would wake around 2am and then 7am to eat but went back to sleep. Now he sleeps from 8pm until 6am. Hang in there mama. It gets better!

  • Annabelle's sleep was pretty unpredictable until about 2.5 months when she started only waking up once to eat in a 11-12 hour stretch at night. That lasted until 4 months when she started waking up 2-5 times a night again and we just got back to once on most nights in the last week or so.

Lisa has had 10 good nights in a row, so I guess that means she started sleeping better around 8.5 weeks? She's been giving us a 5 to 7 hour stretch at night, and possibly a 2 or 3 hour bonus sleep on top of that, depending on when I need to get up for the day. I consider that STTN, and I know how lucky I am. Before this happened, our nights were hell. She would be up and colicky until the wee hours of the morning. It slowly phased out to where she was having more good nights than bad.

You will get to know what works for her as far as a bedtime routine goes. Also, her needs will become easier to predict and read. You will get through it. You've been through so much already, you can and will survive this phase. The human body is capable of adjusting to amazing things, including very little sleep!

  • DD did just flip a switch one night around 6 weeks, where I could get a 5 hour stretch most nights.

The whole process has been ebb and flow, though, honestly, she will go many nights STTN even now and then have a setback (teething, illness, or whatever), but it is only one wake up as opposed to 5 or 6!

Hang in there, mama, it gets better!!

The exhaustion is so tough mentally and physically.

I don't remember when the pedi said she could sleep longer without feeds, but one HUGE mistake I made was being the parent that was up 100% of the times with her at night even if I wasn't feeding her.  She is so used to me being the calming parent that, even now at 13 months, I am "stuck" in that role overnight.  I never asked DH to help, I just took care of it.

Not trying to be annoying and give unsolicited advice, but I would highly suggest having DH pitch in as soon as you can at night so LO gets used to him being a calming influence so the weight of the world isn't always on your shoulders.  As soon as you can pump maybe one bottle, it is SO RELIEVING to get just a 5 hour stretch while he feeds the baby.  I did this during the day a few times and it helped me feel less exhausted just to skip one feeding.

That is the biggest mistake I have made with parenting so far.

    Hang in there, Del.

Thanks hope! I too do all the feedings, changings and soothings. DH offered to do one last night and I said no. Mainly because I knew I would be up anyway. He does do daytime soothings and yesterday even changed a diaper...lol.

I was similar where it started out where I would just be like, "nah, I am up anyways", well that morphed into, "nah, I'll just take care of it" feeling like it was my job, morphed into, "she will scream for 20 minutes if you try and will settle immediately if I do it and I am tired, so I will just take it".

The best part about the zombie-like exhaustion is that night that you get five hours feels like you have been to a dayspa!  Sets the bar nice and low for sleep going forward.  Just wait until her first 8 hour STTN!  Heaven!

DS wasn't either. Where doe she sleep? Have you tried the RNP? It made a big difference for my son in the beginning days. The incline and cozy feel of it is what I think helped. Eventually he tolerated a swaddle too but at first it was a no go.

Good luck Delino, its so hard in the beginning! Then when I started to get into a great groove, he regressed and now we are just getting back on track.  I feel for you!

  • Thats good that she likes sleeping flat! Most babies don't so thats one hurdle you won't need to worry about.

My son still screamed his head off/would fight it when I would put it on but ultimately he was able to fall asleep faster and stay asleep.

    Good luck!
