We were hanging out today and Ds and DH were kidding around and going back and forth about Father's Day and my response was " Ha! I don't have a dad!"

His response was, "just cuz he's not here doesn't mean he's not in heaven"

My automatic response was a hateful one and Dh just looked at me like, dude, not in front of the kid.

Didn't even realize I was being hateful until he said something.

Way to ruin a good moment, Shanado.

    Awww, Shanado, I'm sorry. 

    I promise, you're not the first person to do something like this.  I can be really negative at times, and I definitely have been known to ruin a moment without thinking before making an offhand comment :(

    Does D know anything about the situation? I mean, obviously it would have to be explained at his level. But I don't think there is anything wrong with explaining why a day is a painful reminder for you. You'd be equipping him to understand bad feelings are normal and it is OK to address them. I don't think you need to be so harsh on yourself. We are always our own worst critics.
