Nurseries and Baby Gear

What else do I need?

I just had my baby shower last week and DH and I have been slowly accumulating gear throughout this pregnancy. The only major item I know we still need to purchase is the stroller. We're planning on getting the Bob Revolution and the car seat adapter.

Below, I've listed everything we already have, but is there anything else that's very important or that BTDT Moms couldn't live without?

Car Seat

Bouncer/Swing

Rock'n'play

Crib

Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper

Infant Bathtub, all Bath Supplies

Diapers and Wipes (In NB and Size 1)

Ergo Carrier (Still need to get Infant Insert)

Mombo

Clothing

Blankets

ETA: Diaper Bag

TIA for any advice or suggestions!

  • I'd make sure you have a snot sucker, little nail clippers or a file, maybe a swaddle me or swaddle blankets, and diaper rash cream like desitin. Also, you will want some super absorbent pads for after you give birth.

I actually do have these items as well, in a little Baby First Aid Kit. I do have 2 swaddle blankets and rash cream too.

Thank you for the reminder about maternity pads--definitely still need to get those!

This. Get a nosefrieda. The concept is gross but they are seriously amazing.

  • have you gotten sleep sacks? they are huge helps since it is a no-no to cover baby with a blanket. It keeps them warm and they cant kick it off.
  • I assume you have baby bottles or breast pump.

The thing I couldn't live without (but every baby is different), is white noise to help them sleep.  We used an old iPod on a speaker stand, and just setup a replay of a white noise sound track.

Thanks for the reminder. I was planning to get some sleep sacks, but I haven't yet..any brands you'd recommend?

I ordered a pump from my insurance, but I think they send it right around my actual due date. I have some bottles, but still need to get milk storage bags.

  • Don't forget about you!  I'm not sure if you're going to nurse but lanolin cream, and also some loose tops and bottoms for after baby :D
  • If you have swaddlemes already, you don't need a sleepsack right away.  We used swaddlemes and the Halo swaddle/sleepsack for the first 3-4 months, then we transitioned DS into just a sleepsack.

Missing on your list is burp cloths (and A TON of it), BF supplies (ie, BF pillow, nipple cream, soothie gel pads).

FWIW, we got 2 of those bulb things from the hospital, and we have never used it (DS is 7 months now).  I know many hospitals will give them to you, so you may want to hold off on buying a nosefrieda.

I lived in nursing tanks (the Gilligan and OMalley ones from Target).  Also, I loved the Boppy brand waterproof changing table liners.  It was so much simpler to just change the liner when pee/poo got on it rather than changing the whole cover.

And burp cloths, lots of those.  Also nursing pads.  I didn't leak a ton except when I was feeding on one side at first, the other would let down too.  what a mess if I didn't keep a pad or burp cloth on it.

I only have 3 burp cloths, but was planning to use regular wash cloths as well.

Will this work? Or, is it really better to get more burp cloths?

I bought several "nursing friendly" maternity tops and dresses...so I'm planning to use those and get some nursing tanks from Target.

Wash cloths are too small. Cloth diapers are great.

  • The Gerber cloth diapers work great for burp cloths.  Buy at least a pack or two of those.  (Actual cloth diapers work even better)

You will find that regular washcloths feel awful scratchy against baby's sensitive skin (even ones you think are soft).  Cloth diapers work the best; but any burp cloth tend to be gentler that a regular washcloth.  Also burp cloths dont have as much lint trandferring onto you or baby.
