Pilates Reformer & Pregnancy?

Hi Everyone,

I've been practicing reformer pilates for several years now and just found out I'm expecting.  While I'll be sure to check with my doctor when I go to my appointment, I was wondering if any of you ladies had any experience with reformer work during pregnancy?

From what I can tell via my googling, it seems like during the 1st tri it should be ok,  but after that it seems as though supine work may need to be avoided. (Which is typically a big part of most classes.)  Does anyone have any experience or insight they could share? TIA!

Re: Pilates Reformer & Pregnancy?

  • I did  it until my due date with both of my pregnancies. I just altered as needed and as instructed by my teacher. I did lots of abs and did not have any separation issues. Some modifications included using the chair vs reformer, not doing anything on my stomach, limiting time spent on my back, doing lots of arm and leg work.  Reformer is awesome I never had back issues and overdue with my son I was at Gymboree with my daughter playing getting on the floor etc. I credit everything to having a strong core.

  • I actually don't teach it, but I take it with my colleague. I did it for the first tri/2nd try.....You have to modify some of the positions on your back.
