Special Needs

picture schedules

DD has an ASD diagnosis and we are working on sign language as she is non verbal at this point at 27 months. We are starting to work on using pictures to let her know what is coming next or where we are going and pictures to help identify mommy and daddy.
DH and I are putting the pictures together and I had a few questions I didn't think to ask. If I take a picture of daycare or therapy, do I take a picture of the outside of the building or her classroom or gym? For things like the playground should she be in the pictures or does it matter?
I wanted to get some started so we can work on them this week in OT and Speech.

Re: picture schedules

  • I'm a special education teacher lurking :) I'm sure you will get different responses from others, but it can't hurt to take both and see what works best.  I do know that the research for video modeling (similar to picture schedules, but where a child watches the sequence on say an iPad) shows that there is a stronger response when the kiddo is IN the video.  Not sure about the correlation with picture schedules though.

  • Thought of one more place that might be helpful if you haven't seen it yet.  You need to create a free account, but there are a ton of resources.  Picture schedules would be under the Visual Supports module:
