I've been reading some of the posts in this board for a while and am finally getting around to introducing myself!

I'm L (33).  My wife is Z (35).  We've been together nearly 6 years and married since 2.26.12.  We live in Austin, Texas with our two cats, Lucy and Sophie, and our dog, Bama (pictured up there in the corner).

A little (or a lot) about our TTC history... We started to get the itch to TTC in 2011, but decided that we wanted to get married first, so put off TTC until after the wedding.   Our first round of IUIs looked like this -

March 2012 | IUI#1 w/ Letrozole + Ovidrel = BFN

April 2012 | IUI #2 w/ Letrozole + Ovidrel = BFN

May 2012 | IUI #3 w/ Letrozole + acupuncture = BFP

We had our NT scan at 11w5d.  The scan revealed an abnormally high NT measurement (around 4 or 5).  We were immediately referred to a perinatologist for further screenings.  After another detailed scan with more bad news, we elected to have a CVS the very next day.  A couple of days later, we received the FISH results confirming that we were having a boy and that he had full Trisomy 18 (Edward?s Syndrome).

For those who may not know, T18 is considered a diagnosis that is ?incompatible with life? ? it affects nearly every organ and causes severe mental retardation.  For some reason, boys with T18 have even worse outcome than girls.  The majority of babies with T18 do not survive pregnancy and/or labor and almost all that do will die within the first year of life.  We made the devastating and gut-wrenching decision to terminate the pregnancy at 13 weeks.   Although it felt like my heart was being ripped out of my body, my wife and I felt like the most protective decision we could make for our son was to save him from any suffering.  I share this because all of you who have also experienced a loss know how the experience changes your perspective and frames the rest of your TTC journey.  The particular decisions we had to make along the way are part of our experience.

Fast forward a few months.  Amidst much fear and anxiety, we had our next IUI in January 2013 - (IUI#4 w/ Letrozole = BFN).  Our second IUI (5th overall) w/ Letrozole + acupuncture resulted in BFP! We scheduled our NT scan at the very earliest our OB?s office would allow  - 11w5d.  And, our baby looked perfect ? ?textbook? according to the ultrasound tech!  The midwife offered us the MaterniT21 testing, but gave us reassurance that all indications pointed to us having a healthy baby.  We received the results of the M21 test around 14 weeks and the test confirmed we were having a boy and that he tested negative for all the major trisomy disorders.  Big sigh of relief!

So, here we are ? 17 weeks and happy!  I have still have fears like all pregnant mommas probably have, but mostly I have faith that we are going to have a sweet, healthy baby boy in our arms in November.

Looking forward to sharing some more experiences with all of you!

Re: Long Introduction

  • Welcome L&Z! You've had a rough road and I'm so sorry for the loss of your first son. I had a missed miscarriage at 16 weeks in March - I honestly have thought many times of women like you who went into the D&E with a living (very sick) baby inside them. I am so sorry you had to make that decision, but with Trisomy 13 and 18, my wife and I made the agreement early on that we would take the path you did. That had to be awful though, and I'm glad you've decided to move forward with another baby.

What great news however that you are KU'd again already, and with a healthy boy this time!!! How exciting and awesome for you. There is a pregnancy check-in each week on Monday's so be sure to add yourself. Lots of us who aren't pregnant yet check in on the TTC checkin also on Mondays. We call keep tabs on each other this way.

There are three others who check in regularly I know of who had losses and are now pg - so you are not alone in struggling as a PAGL mom. I hope to be one soon too but am totally terrified especially with a 2nd tri loss. It's great to have the reassurance and support of the board and I'm sure you'll be happy here!

    Congrats again!!

Welcome to the board!  I am so sorry you had to go through such a difficult process.  I can't even imagine.  We got pregnant last Spring which ended up a miscarriage discovered at 12 weeks.  Genetic testing revealed it was due to Turner Syndrome.  Like you, with this pregnancy I also opted to have the MaterniT21 testing and the NT scan done.  I am so thankful the MaterniT21 test is an option, especially for those of us who have gone through a loss due to a chromosomal abnormality.  Anyway, welcome to the boards and congrats!!

Thank you for sharing this with me.  I know many mommas who have lost babies, but not any others who have known of a confirmed chromosomal abnormality. I definitely felt very lonely at the time (even though I had great support).  Congrats on your new little one!
