Natural Birth

St. Louis Area

I posted this question once but deleted it as the responses made me rethink the way I had asked the question. Maybe it wasn't clear what I was looking for.

I am unable to use the birth center in the area because it is too far from my home. I have a great ob but when I deliver it will be a vbac. I know that this complicates things as far as the hospitals are concerned. I do not intend to go to the hospital until it is necessary which will hopefully cut back some of the chance for intervention. My question is do any St. Louis ladies have good hospital reviews or suggestions. I delivered my first at St. Anthony's. It was great but it was a csection do to frank breech with unsuccessful version.

Re: St. Louis Area

  • I'm delivering at MoBap. They seem to be the most natural birth friendly hospital in the area. I would definitely suggest taking a tour

I've had several friends who have delivered at MoBap and all have said they've had good experiences. My very good friend, who used to work there, is also delivering there in a few months.

    *Waves* Hi Jill!

  • I know there is a big doula population in the St. Louis area- I bet if you can connect with them, they would also have advice on what hospitals are VBAC friendly. GL!!
  • I don't understand how the birth center is too far, but STL area hospitals aren't?  MoBap is wonderful and where I'm delivering, but it is not that far from St Charles.

Now, St. Anthony's is further south and would be much closer to you.

This.  This is a great way to find good providers.  It's exactly how I found my very pro-VBAC OB.  (But on the east coast)

    Good luck!

I'm using the midwives at the birth center, but planning a homebirth. It's 40 minutes from my house. Where do you live? How far are you willing to travel if the birth center is too far?

  • By the way, I had my daughter at St. Johns (now Mercy). I hated it! They are not natural birth or breastfeeding friendly. I would avoid that hospital like the plague.

  • I have heard that about St. John's.  I also heard that they move you around a lot. I feel that St. Charles is too far from us. I feel like an hour and a half (or longer if heavy traffic on 270) in a car while in labor could be quite uncomfortable. We delivered our first at St. Anthony's. It was a great csection. I healed quickly. I am going to do tours but I am just looking for consumer feedback I guess. I don't think that I will be able to do a natural birth at St. Anthony's with very little intervention. Has anyone delivered at St. Clair Hospital? Again, I already have a wonderful doc but that is only half the battle. Thanks for your responses I am definitely scheduling a tour with MoBap.

Like I said in the post you deleted, there are other routes to get from you to STC.  Plus, like I also said before....if you're coming as far north as MoBap, you might as well keep going to STC and the birth center.

  • I think if you want a NB and especially if you want a VBAC, finding a supportive doctor is much more important than which hospital you deliver at. So I'd start there. Ask around about which STL docs are best for VBAC.
