WTF allergies?!

I hate that allergies exist and that they're so damn elusive. Wtf. So, my poor baby is allergic to peanuts, so I have to avoid all nuts "just in case". Well, tonight I went to bathe her, took off her onesie, and she suddenly got red splotchy patches all over her body. Now, we're at my IL's so it could have been the detergent in the towel though I doubt it would affect the parts of her it didn't touch. Or, it could be the cat...

Anyway, long story short, I called the pedi's office and the doc on call called back and interviewed me about my diet. She concluded the conversation saying I need to avoid red dyes, fish, and sesame seeds and just "keep an eye on" soy. If Amelia continues to have allergic reactions we'll have to switch to formula...

I'm just really upset. I don't think it's something I ate, and honestly I'm fairly certain it's the cat since we're never around cats. However, the prospect of switching to formula made me a wreck because BFing is my favorite thing in the world, even with it's inconveniences, and so I hope to God she stops having reactions to things. Also, obviously, I could do without the freaking out about her and wondering when the next reaction will leave her unable to breathe. ::mobile very sad face::

Anyway, I guess I just needed to get that out. DH has done his best to console me but that's not really his strong suit, haha. Mama needs a bath.

  • I'm so sorry you are going though this.  I hope it's just the cat too.  Hugs!

Sorry you're going through this. Are you a fan of the Leaky Bb on FB? ::realized mobile might not put the at signs. Leaky has to use them in place of o in boob on FB Anyway lots of people there are on limited diets due to allergies. Also the FF suggestion is odd to me since studies have shown EBF to be very beneficial with food allergy babies

I thought the same about the FF, but she said it was because at a certain point I'd be avoiding so much that my diet would no longer be ideal for breastfeeding...but I really don't think we'll even get to that point and I'd need a lot of convincing anyway. :-)

  • I'm sorry! I would be upset too, I would not like the idea of being told we may have to switch to formula. I hope it's just the cat too. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!!

  • I'm so sorry! I totally feeling you on the BFing thing, I would hate to have to give it up. Really hoping it's just the cat or is at least fixed by avoiding dyes/fish.

I would question this too. Your diet actually has a relatively small effect on your breast milk in terms of quality of the milk. As long as you can get enough calories and fluid your milk should be fine, even if you end up having to avoid certain things for your LO. Plenty of moms have to restrict their diet due to allergies or sensitivities. I'm sorry you're going through this. I'd definitely follow up with your regular pedi though.

How did the diagnose the peanut allergy? Blood test? If so they should've tested for almost everything under the sun. DD had the blood test.

It sounds like she had a contact rash on her body. Did someone ick her up and touch her skin? DD would get those as a baby when someone touched her that had eaten/touched peanuts.

What all was being eaten at the house you were at? what did you eat? Peanuts can hide and there's the risk of cross contamination too.

I think the Dr's advice RE: FF stems from removing all those items. Soy is in darn near everything these days.

Did the Dr give you an EPI pen? If not, ask for one.

It's a hard process, especially once you're feeding baby table foods, but it's doable. We've been dealing with it for over 2 years so I know your stress!
