Convertible Car Seat Recommendations

We're ready to get our LO out of the infant bucket and into a convertible car seat. I've been doing some research online but still not sure which one we should go with. DH and I both drive Jeep Grand Cherokees if that matters. LO is 75% percentile for height and we would like to RF as long as possible. I'm looking at the Britax Marathon and the Recaro ProRide right now, it looks like they are the most popular from what I can see. This may be a silly question, but do convertible seats attach on a base like the infant buckets? Will I have to buy 2 car seats instead of one car seat and an extra base?

Re: Convertible Car Seat Recommendations

  • You will have to buy two convertible seats if you will need them on a regular basis in two different cars.

We have two Britax Boulevards (one for each child)  and have been happy with them.  The Boulevard has a little more side padding than the Marathon.

Since your child is taller than average, I would steer away from Britax since they have short shells and generally don't RF as long as other seats.  I have a tall kid too and have done a lot of research, and some seats that will RF tall kids longer (in order of'cost) are the Graco MySize 70/Size4Me 70/Headwise, the Diono Radians, Chicco NexFit, and e Clek Foonf.

This, my five and a half year old just turned forward facing in her Diono Radian RXT.  She still has weight and height to grow, but I turned her forward facing since it would be easier.  We were given custody of two more and with my three it means we have five that are seven and under, including a 6 month old and a nearly one month old.  The younger three are still rear facing.  Logan went into Leah's RXT.

  • Since your child is tall I would avoid britax since their seats have a notoriously short shell and won't allow you to RF very long. The recaro is reputed to not have great leg room too.

    Look at:
    clek foonf
    diono radian
    chicco nextfit
peg perego convertibe (forget its name)
    graco mysize/size4me/headwise
    graco myride 65

All of those have far greater RF capabilities than a britax

  • We are getting the Chicco Nextfit as soon as it comes out!

My second choice would be the Diono Radian RXT.

Both have steel frames, good for taller kids (my LO is 95 percentile), and good for extended rear-facing.

I considered Britax and Recaro too. We have a Britax B-Safe infant seat we love, but the convertible seats aren't good for tall kids. And the Recaro has very little leg room.

This. Britax are great seats if you have a smaller than average child, which you do not. Also I've heard it said the Recaro is a great seat so long as your child doesn't have legs; meaning it has the worst leg room of pretty much any convertible car seat.

All the seats recommended are great seats for a tall child and should get your LO rear facing till 3-4.

They'll at least et you closer to 3 than other seats. My middle kid hit the RF height limit on the radian at 2y 9m and is even with the top harness slots now, at 3y 8m. . But she has an insanely long torso and is far from  the norm even for tall kids.

  • Thanks! We've decided to get the Chicco Nextfit. I'm going to order it from BRU and hopefully have it next week!
  • I'd go for the Britax Marathon or the Chicco Nextfit. Both are great and yes you will need to buy 2 seats These articles may help you choose which is best for you
