Tell me about your car

Mobile title: tell me about your car

DH and I have come to the determination that my little ford fiesta is just not going to cut it with a baby. I love my car, but if the three of us go somewhere, the passenger is basically pushed up so far to accommodate the car seat that they are sitting practically on the dashboard. H determined that this is wildly unsafe and green lighted a new car purchase for me!

So, anyone have any good recommendations? I am thinking something in the small SUV family. Obviously something with lots of room, preferably something that is not completely terrible on gas. Thoughts?

  • I have a Chevy blazer. It's a smaller SUV and its perfect for us. I just bought it last year right before getting pregnant and glad I did. I used to drive a very small car I feel LO and I are a lot safer in a larger vehicle. It's not great on gas but its not awful.

  • I had a 2 door coupe, but recently bought a Honda CR-V. It seems like the perfect 'mommy mobile'. It's really safe and roomy, but not too overwhelming to drive.
  • I loved my mom's RAV4 - I think it was a 2011. VERY safe, and enough room for a car seat. We had a really bad car accident in it, and DS and I came out with only a few knicks from broken glass (and lots of seatbelt brusing for me). Looking at pictures, I have no idea how I walked away.

She bought a Ford Escape after the accident - that was also nice and fit the car seat really well.

We have a Honda Accord - lots of space in the backseat and comfortable.

I drive a Highlander - we bought it to have a bigger car to accommodate two carseats and still be able to fit other people and stuff. The downside is that you can't put car seats in the third row (it's a fold-down seat), and you can't move the second row forward to access the third row seating if you have two car seats in.  It's also pretty mediocre on gas mileage for city driving.

One reason I like smaller SUVs is because the seat is at a convenient height for putting the car seat in/out without having to bend/lift too much.

  • I have a Nissan Murano and love it. This is my 6 or 7th car and it is by fat my favorite. I've actually just went back to it after driving a Pathfinder for awhile. Although if you need a third row this isn't your car it's just a crossover. I've also driven the Volvo crossover and I think you can now get it with a small 3rd row and it is also great and very safe.

  • I have a GMC Acadia that we bought last summer. I love it! It drives great and has OK gas mileage for an SUV. The middle row has the option of captains chairs or bench seat. We chose the bench seat because we have dogs who will go in the back when we fold the third row down :)

  • I'm not a huge fan of SUV's myself because they tend to be pretty terrible on gas.  I drive 35 miles each way for work, so that would kill me.  I have a Toyota Matrix and really like it.  I get about 30 mpg (I think).  It's not an SUV, but it's big enough to accomodate a car seat with other passengers comfortably and the hatchback is great for schlepping soccer gear, groceries, etc.

  • We recently bought a GMC Acadia and love it! We went with the second row captains chairs so people can get to the third row without moving the carseats. The gas mileage is decent.

I drive a Camry. It isn't the biggest car but is fine with the convertible carseat RFing and will be fine when we add the infant seat. The driver and passenger still have room with the carseats in place.

I love my Subaru Forester. We had to move the passenger seat a smudge to accommodate the car seat but it is not uncomfortable unless the person is really tall. Decent gas mileage very reliable and highly rated for safety. Added bonus it's all wheel drive so it handles all sorts of weather and terrain without a second thought.

    This exactly. Love my Forester!

  • We have a 2010 Subaru Forester and a 2013 Subaru Outback and we love them both. Two car seats can fit rear facing and we could go three across in the backseat should the need arise. There's plenty of room for our BOB Duallie and groceries can be wedged in there even with the stroller. We both get about 25 mpg.

  • I have a 2011 Toyota Rav4 and love it! It's roomy, but doesn't feel too big when you're driving. Decent room for car seats and excellent height for getting kids in and out. Gas milage is good too!

  • I have a MINI Cooper right now, but am pretty confident I'll need to get something else within the next several months. Right now I'm looking at a Honda CRV, a Toyota Rav 4, they just changed the body style and look so much better, and a Toyota Prius V. I want something comfortable for my tall hubby that gets great gas mileage and can haul our lab in the back. Please note I haven't test driven any of these, just looked at prices and reviews online. Good luck.

  • I really love our Subaru Outback.  It's great for us, baby and our two dogs!  It has plenty of room too - so we only had to scootch up the passenger seat a little for the carseat.  It also just feels super safe.

  • I have a Toyota 4 runner and love it!! it's decent on gas and pretty roomy. I will end up getting a bigger vehicle because this is my third baby and I like to have my kids have room- so I am looking into getting a Toyota sequoia.

    Love Toyotas!!

  • I really like my (2012) CR-V.  It is excellent on gas and is pretty spacious for being a smaller SUV.  For what it's worth, I was deciding between a Rav 4, Forester and the CR-V.  We went with the CR-V because it had more standard features than both the Rav 4 and the Forester for a lesser cost.  It is also much roomier than the Rav 4.

  • Love my Mazda CX5! We are about to have 2 car seats so I've thought about upgrading to something a little bigger but the gas mileage would be hard to give up.

  • We just (as in last week) bought a base Dodge Journey. I hate spending money on a vehicle, but DH was adamant that my old Ford Taurus had to go. Journey was only $19k MSRP, dealer invoice is even less, minus $1,000 cash back...Waaaay less than a Ford Edge ($28) or Chevy Equinox ($25). A foreign brand was out for us (didn't consider). The Journey had top safety ratings, and the base model came with all sorts of features - a 4" screen, UConnect (syncs with smartphone, be sure to ask for UConnect phone) Heated mirrors, dual climate zones, in-floor storage compartments in second row, push button start, LATCH system on all 3 back seats, etc. So far I'm very happy with it - it's a small SUV, but still roomy inside.
