STTN Babies

For those of you who have babies who STTN, how do they fall asleep? Do you successfully do drowsy but awake or is there rocking or some other routine involved?

My son sleeps all night but I have to do a fair amount of rocking and the perfect crib transfer for everything to go right. I'm cool with it because of the end result, but at some point would like him to learn the skill of falling asleep on his own. I'm in no rush to change things, but just wondering what everyone else is doing.

Re: STTN Babies

  • My son takes a binky and has a taggie blanket. I put him to bed at the same time every night. He can seem wide awake but if its time then I take him to his bed, kiss hug and say nite nite, put him down, give him binky and taggie, and turn on his seahorse. I then walk away. He doesn't cry or fuss he just watches the seahorse until he is out. I feel like comfort items are important.

  • DD gets her paci and goes to bed. She lately has been taking longer to fall asleep but when I am finished nursing her I just lay her down and walk away. She usually can put herself to sleep.

  • Honestly...she pretty much started STTN on her own. I nursed her to sleep a lot in the beginning and she just started sleeping longer and longer. She will wake up for a few minutes and fall back asleep. Now I just put her down and she talks herself to sleep. For naps I just let her fuss it out. If she wakes up hungry, I nurse her and she goes back to sleep.

  • Even though 4 nights this weeks LO has been sleeping through the night since about 8 weeks. I'm not calling this a regression yet. Anyway, we give a bottle I a EP'er then burp her, swaddle, give her her paci and then hold her in our arms while standing and swaying for a minute or two, until her eyes start fluttering then we lay her down. She will normally open her eyes then close them back and she's out for the evening. She typically goes to bed between 7:30p 8p.

Edit: I forgot to add that she totally did the drowsy but awake thing on her own. Before that we would rock her until she was asleep and do the same extremely careful crib transfer.
  • I nurse DS to sleep most nights. He wakes when I transfer him to his bed but is pretty drowsy and goes right to sleep. On a couple of rare occasions I've just looked at his sleepy face and taken him straight to bed with no problems. His STTN is very hit and miss though. He did it for a week straight when he first started and then was up for one MOTN feed again, then last night was the first STTN after 3 nights up every hour and very fussy. I didn't do anything different any of those nights, babies are just unpredictable.
  • I try to put DD down at same time every night, awake but drowsy. She likes to hold and rub a AA blankie on her face and falls asleep to lullabies. Sometimes she'll take a pacifier. I also tell her goodnight, see you in the morning, give her hugs and kisses

  • She'll often fall asleep during her last feed, but I can put her down awake as long as she is settled and not fussing.

  • I give her the bottle in our room and when she finishes it she's almost always pretty awake, I just take her to her room, lay her in bed, give her the paci and turn the lights and music mobile on; she's usually out in less than 5 min

I nurse her to sleep then she wakes up a little when I move her and she lifts her feet up straight then slams them down repeatedly until she falls back asleep.

  • About a month ago DD started putting herself to sleep. Around 8 I nurse her on the couch and she dozes off. DH then takes her from me and takes her upstairs and puts her in her sleep sack. She wakes up during this but goes right back to sleep in her crib. It's been so awesome to not have to rock and worry about waking her during the transfer. We didn't do anything to make her so this she just did it one day and has ever since.

  • Depends on the day.  Sometimes I lay DD down with little preamble and she's out within a minute or two.  Other days I might have to "dance" around with her a bit (you know, the mommy sway/shuffle/rock ;) ) before laying her down.  Others I rock her while she's in her bed.  Sometimes she's happy, sometimes she's not.  It's pretty inconsistent right now and I never know what's going to happen until it's actually time for her to go to sleep.

  • When we start seeing sleepy signs we take DS upstairs, diaper change, PJs, sleep sack, then a book. We lay him in his crib awake, give him his pacifier tell him "goodnight, we'll see you in the morning". On a good night we'll have to back in maybe twice to give him his pacifier and say "it's bedtime time for sleep". On a bad night he'll fight it for a half hour and I'll nurse him to sleep.

  • It's hit or miss, but I've been working on laying her down awake the past week or so.  Sometimes she fusses once or twice when the paci falls out, but then goes right to sleep.  The last couple nights, she "talks" for 20 mins or so, then fusses for the pacifier, then goes to sleep.  I guess I have to start putting her down earlier if she's going to talk t herself so long ;)  I worry because I have to get her up early, so she needs to get to bed before 8:30.
